Well it is a snowy day here in SW Michigan / NW Indiana, so I thought I would take a few minutes and RAMBLE a little bit.
The fire truck industry continues to struggle with build times. It seems to be getting worse AFTER the covid virus, is allegedly over ?
Sure, there are still some supplier chain and manpower issues. It does however make you wonder if it is as bad as the builders claim ? They are plenty of truck builds out there approaching that twenty plus month timeline and still not finished.
WE know one thing, if a little of it is intentional to keep demand and price up, they are doing a good job. OF course with raw material costs, it pretty much is THE price of the day every Monday morning !
Anyway, the lead time on those commercial chassis is crazy long! I have heard upwards of a year and a half. Some builders only have short windows of time when you can even place the order.
With that being said, I think chassis builders like Spartan Chassis, will see an increase in their orders, due to much shorter lead times on a custom style of chassis. May even start seeing more tanker types of trucks being built on these strictly due to availability !
As new trucks become more expensive and taking longer to build, I believe the used market will be very strong, for at least two to three years.
That being said, I am still blessed to be able to work with Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus in Alabama (firetruckmall.com). Jeremy McCoy is my contact and what a pleasure to work with this firm. So if you are looking for used, demo or a refurbed truck, please reach out to me and I will do the homework for a vehicle that meets your requirements. Many times these trucks are immediately available and in numerous cases, include a warranty !
So whether it is a new build here in Michigan with KME or a used apparatus with Brindlee Mountainfin Michigan or Northern Indiana, we can assist you every step of the way !
Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving. Stay safe and thank you for your service !
