A Hall effect sensor is a transducer that varies its output voltage in response to a magnetic field. Hall effect sensors are used for proximity switching, positioning, speed detection, and current sensing applications. In its simplest form, the sensor operates as an analog transducer, directly returning a voltage.

This is a really nice variac, and it'll handle quite a bit of power. These things are very handy to have on your workbench, there are so many uses for them. Variacs are also refered to as an autotransformer. These devices are variable transformers, allowing you to vary the voltage from zero to whatever. With this unit you could set it up for various outputs from 40 to 280 volts AC. The most common use would be 0-120.

Affiliated has a large collection of surplus stepper motors, they are perfect for a plethora of applications. Three dimensional printers have become popular, you could get started on your own with some of these steppers.

A stepper motor is a brushless DC electric motor that divides a full rotation into a number of equal steps. The main considerations in picking out a stepper for you project are:

1) Operating speed in steps/second
2) Torque in oz-in.
3) Load inertia in Ib-in.2
4) Required step angle
5) Time to accelerate in ms
6) Time to decelerate in ms
7) Type of drive to be used
8) Voltage and amperage

When you know the number of steps the motor's position can be commanded to move and hold at one of any one of these steps, without any feedback sensor. The most common uses for steppers are in printers and in CNC machines.

We now carry RGB LEDs. The "RGB" stands for red, green, and blue. The LED can output any of those colors simultaneously, creating other colors like yellow, white, purple, etc. These are common cathode, and in a T1 3/4 package. We wrote a little code for the Arduino to make an LED light show, check out the video.

Check out this little Jacob's ladder we made. It conducts high voltage through the spark gap between the two wires. The arc rises because the air is heated, ionized, and leaves a raising pocket of plasma with less resistance than below it. FYI, plasma is the fourth state of matter. A plasma is a hot ionized gas consisting of approximately equal numbers of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons.
