Safety First: A Rig Recovery Mission 🛡️🏗️

We recently helped a customer bring a rig back home, but what we found when we arrived was a stark reminder of why professional equipment handling is so critical.
First, the rig had been left abandoned at a truck stop rather than being properly returned. More importantly, the contractors left the pipe screwed into the mast—a massive safety violation. 🛑🙅‍♂️

Here is why that is a "no-go": When a rig is in motion, a pipe left in the mast can unscrew itself due to vibration. That’s exactly what happened here. A loose pipe inside a moving mast is an incredibly dangerous hazard; it can fall out during transport, leading to catastrophic injury or worse.

Our team had to jump into action to make things safe. Derek and our shop helper, Jackson, performed a "surgical" extraction using a crane. The biggest challenge? Finding the pipe's exact center of balance while it was still inside the mast so we could lift it out steadily without it shifting or dropping.

It took some creative rigging and a lot of patience, but we got the pipe out and the rig secured. We’re glad we could help our customer get their equipment back in one piece—and more importantly, keep everyone on the road safe.

Remember: taking shortcuts with safety isn't just "unprofessional"—it’s dangerous. Do it right, every time. 🛠️✨

Looking for a straightforward, mechanical rig with a legendary track record? The Portadrill 524/2 remains a staple in the water well industry, built for contractors who value reliability and the tactile feedback that only a classic rotary table drive can provide.

Proven Power & Performance:
Engine: The bulletproof Caterpillar 3208 Diesel, known for its durability and easy maintenance.
Transmission: 8 LL (Low-Low) gearing, providing the massive torque needed for difficult sites and heavy drilling loads.

Mud System: Rugged 5 ½ x 8 Gardner Denver duplex pump for traditional fluid-rotary jobs.

Instruction Manuals vs. Shop Reality 🛠️🤨

If you stopped by the shop lately, you might have seen our shop truck looking a little... deconstructed.

We needed to get a gooseneck hitch installed to meet a specific delivery requirement, but since this was the only truck in the fleet without one, it was time for some "truck surgery." 🚑🔧

Now, according to the official instructions, you’re supposedly able to install this hitch without removing the bed. But after looking at the clearance, Steve and Derek are calling foul. Unless you happen to be a "secret little tiny guy" who can teleport hardware into 2-inch gaps, that bed had to come off! 🛑🙅‍♂️

In fact, the bed has been off and on multiple times now to make sure everything is shimmed, bolted, and reinforced exactly right. We don’t just "slide things under"—we make sure it’s done to the standard our customers expect.

It might have taken a few extra lifts, but we’re officially road-ready and gooseneck-equipped!

What’s the "easiest" repair you’ve ever done that turned into a weekend-long project? Let’s hear your shop horror stories in the comments! 👇
