🚌 Throwback Thursday | Tulsa, Oklahoma — 1953

This photo from the BKL archives shows our Street Committee Survey team doing something that looks simple — riding a city bus. But this WAS the engineering.

In the early 1950s, before computers, GPS, or any modern data tools, civil engineers assessed Tulsa's streets the old-fashioned way: they rode them. Known as a "windshield survey," engineers would travel routes by bus or car — observing pavement conditions, drainage problems, congestion points, and infrastructure wear — and record everything by hand in detailed field notes. That handwritten data would then drive decisions about where to invest, what to repair, and how to plan Tulsa's growing street network.

These well-dressed gentlemen weren't just riding the bus. They were building the future of Tulsa — one observation at a time.

What a day! 🛠️

BKL was honored to participate in an Engineering Intern Field Trip today, hosted by the City of Tulsa. Our interns and recent engineering grads got to tour Tulsa's water and wastewater treatment plants — a behind-the-scenes look at the systems that deliver clean water and protect public health for hundreds of thousands of Tulsans every day.

The day wrapped with a Q&A where young professionals could learn about career opportunities — both with the City and with engineering firms like BKL. It was a great reminder of how important it is to invest in the people coming up behind us.

We're 80 years old this year, and events like this are exactly why we're still going strong. The next generation of great engineers is out there — and we're glad to be part of mentoring them. 🎓

Today we’re celebrating 55 years of the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, one of Oklahoma’s biggest infrastructure success stories. ⚓️

On June 5, 1971, President Richard Nixon came to Catoosa to officially dedicate the Port in front of a crowd of 20,000 people. That moment marked a new chapter for Oklahoma, connecting our state to the McClellan Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System and opening the door for decades of commerce, industry, and job growth.

BKL’s connection to the Port goes back even further. In 1965, our team completed the original Plan of Development for the Port of Catoosa, helping shape the vision for what would become one of the region’s most important economic engines.

Since then, more than 50,000 barges have moved through the Port, supporting over 70 companies and thousands of Oklahoma jobs.

Here’s to 55 years of moving Oklahoma forward, and to the vision that helped make it possible. 🚢

Did you know the USS Batfish — Muskogee’s beloved WWII submarine — actually floated away during the historic 2019 floods? 🚢

When the Arkansas River surged to its highest point since 1943, the Batfish broke free from her moorings at Muskogee War Memorial Park and floated for the first time in nearly 50 years. The flooding caused significant damage to the vessel and surrounding site.

We are proud to share that BKL was awarded the restoration project in 2021. Our team has been working alongside the Muskogee War Memorial Park to engineer a solution that will permanently stabilize this irreplaceable piece of Oklahoma and American history — so she never floats away again.

The USS Batfish sank three enemy submarines in 76 hours during WWII — a record that still stands today. It’s an honor to play a role in protecting her story for future generations.

The Biggest Moment on the Mother Road.

Route 66 is more than a roadway—it is a symbol of adventure, innovation, and the spirit that helped shape our nation. For generations, the Mother Road has connected people, places, and communities, and today it remains at the heart of Tulsa’s identity as the Capital of Route 66.

As our city celebrates this once-in-a-century milestone and makes history once again, BKL is honored to have played a part in preserving and enhancing this legendary route by designing improvements along much of Tulsa’s historic Route 66 corridor.
