Marie-Alexandre-Lucien Coudray was an award-winning, highly sought-after medallion maker in the late 19th century. Born in Paris, he eventually made his way to the Villa Medici in Rome in 1893, where he carved this medal “Orpheus Returning from Hades without Eurydice,” which won the Prix de Rome and eventually won silver at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in France.
Thanks to the Paris Mint’s purchase of it in 1899, this original hand-carved steel hub from Coudray made its way into our collection of antique jewelry hubs. You can now use this work of art in your own metalarts with just an impression die!
