Paint-grade or stain-grade changes which trim you should buy for your project.

MDF takes paint well and costs roughly 30 to 50 percent less than solid wood, but it doesn't hold up well in bathrooms or anywhere moisture collects.

If you plan to stain, solid wood is the sounder choice, since MDF has no real grain to show through a stain.

Match the material to the finish and the room, not just the price tag.

Before you load lumber onto the truck, take thirty seconds to sight down the board.

Bow is when the face curves along its length, like a smile lying on its side.

Crook is the same idea, but along the edge instead of the face.

Cup is when the board curves across its width, like a shallow trough.

Twist is when the corners don't sit flat, even on a level surface.

A little bit of any of these is normal in lumber. A lot of it means the board will fight you on the job.

Sight down every piece before it goes on the truck. It takes less time than fixing it later.

Older Georgia homes carry a character that new construction can't fake.

Deep sills, real plaster, openings cut by hand instead of a nail gun. Frames are sometimes out of square. Sometimes there's plaster instead of drywall behind the trim.

If you're replacing windows in a house with real age on it, expect some surprises once you start measuring, and expect that "standard size" isn't going to be the whole story.

A lumber grade stamp packs five pieces of information into less space than a business card.

It tells you the grading agency, the mill, the grade, the species, and the moisture condition when it was graded.

That's useful information, but it's not a guarantee of how a specific board will perform once it's on your job site.

Learn to read it, then still look at the board in your hands.

Congratulations to Jacob Irvine on being named our Employee of the Month!

Jake recently celebrated one year with Cofer Brothers, and in that short time, he has made a big impact. While he works in sales, Jake is the kind of person who can do just about anything and is always willing to jump in wherever he’s needed.

In just one year, he has become an incredibly knowledgeable and talented salesman, building strong relationships and making lasting connections with so many of our customers. He takes the time to understand what they need, knows our products, and always goes the extra mile to make sure they’re taken care of.

"Energy efficient" gets stamped on a lot of windows. It doesn't always mean the same thing.

Two numbers do most of the work: U-factor and SHGC. U-factor measures how much heat moves through the window itself; lower is better at keeping conditioned air where you want it. SHGC measures how much solar heat gets through the glass, which matters a lot in Georgia summers.

Low-E coatings are usually what's doing the work behind those numbers. They're a microscopically thin layer on the glass that reflects heat while still letting light through.

Frame material plays a role too, since it affects how much heat moves around the edges of the glass, not just through it.

Fiberglass or wood for a front door. Georgia weather makes this less of a style question and more of a maintenance one.

Wood doors look great and can be finished a lot of ways, but they expand and contract with humidity, and they need refinishing over time to hold up.

Fiberglass doors typically last 25 to 30 years, and they hold their finish a lot longer without the same upkeep. Manufacturers can also mold in a convincing wood-grain texture, so you're not necessarily giving up the wood look to get the durability.

Neither one is wrong. It comes down to how much upkeep you want to take on versus how much you want that real wood look and feel.
