A recent tragedy in Florida is a sobering reminder of how dangerous a heavy screen can be when it isnāt securely mounted.
On October 7, 2026, a 5-year-old child died after a roughly 120-pound interactive display board fell on him in his classroom at Riviera Elementary School. School staff called 911 and began aid immediately, but the child did not survive.
Whether at school or church, a large flat-screen or interactive display is NOT a light object. Many weigh 40ā100+ pounds. When mounted incorrectly, they can pull out of the wall under their own weight, from vibration, or from someone pushing or hanging on them.
We see TVs and displays (and speakers, projectors and projection screens) improperly mounted ALL the time. It is truly disturbing.
Not every accident can be prevented, but proper installation goes a long way toward reducing the risk. A correctly mounted screen is anchored into wall studs (or appropriate structural supports) with the right hardware and a mount rated for the weightānot just plastic anchors in drywall. And really heavy TVs require more than that!
If you have TVs, interactive displays or other media equipment that needs to be mountedāor that youāre not confident are properly securedālet Thompson Sound, Inc. handle the installation. Weāve been doing this the right way for decades and can help protect the people who use your spaces.
