Tamarack Lodge is a luxury condominium development in Traverse City, Michigan. The five-story structure is designed as a tribute to the "Arts and Crafts" Movement. When completed, the Tamarack site will consist of four buildings, directly adjacent to 800 feet of beach front on East Grand Traverse Bay. Overall, the development will house 75, two and three bedroom residences for fractional and full ownership condominiums. Tamarack's first phase building consisting of 29, two and three bedroom units opened in July 2006. The main lobby reception, expansive hearth, and hospitality spaces captures the look and feel of great turn-of-the-century grand lodges prominent in the Northern Michigan landscape. As in the "Arts and Crafts" era architecture, the attention to detail, warm earth tone color schemes and the unique blend of old and new, creates an appealing interior ambiance. Each unit includes vintage lighting and plumbing fixtures in elegant style bathroom suites. Other features include jet tubs, flat panel televisions, wireless internet, and state of the art appliances. The open floor plan with large exterior terrace, emphasize views of the surrounding bay and beach front. The project won an "Outstanding Development Award" by the Grand Traverse County Planning Commission in the fall of 2007.

Project: Mari Vineyards. New five story 31,000 square foot winery facility on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City, housing underground wine storage areas, fermentation/production spaces, outdoor production, wine tasting/food service areas, and business/founders suites on Old Mission Peninsula, Traverse City, MI. Construction 2014-2016

Project Goals: To design and construct a unique wine tasting experience while enjoying the panoramic views of East Grand Traverse Bay. Create an Italian Villa historic cultural identity within the modern functioning of wine tasting, service, and production aspects of the facility. Promote the use of highly insulated masonry and stone mass walls in an arcaded arched form work to enhance arrival and circulation throughout the facility. The Tasting Room, with recycled lumber wine tasting service counters and tables, timber framed ceilings and column supports and massive stone fireplace and hearth surrounds, create a welcoming atmosphere of the facility. The client’s extensive medieval artifact collection is displayed within these walls. Upper level Administrative and corporate founder’s conference areas with large exterior balcony creates views of the surrounding villa and bay.

Unique features of the project: Production and underground wine cave functions of the facility were designed underneath the outdoor terraces above- of the facility. Stamped concrete terraces were insulated and waterproofed above the precast concrete plank roof structure of the production area. The 20’ high production room consists of lab and kitchenette areas, toilets and exercise room, and a mezzanine conference room overlooking the fermentation and storage areas of the structure. 15’ below the production room you enter the underground wine cave tunnels which were constructed of 16’ diameter pre-cast concrete caissons in modular sections. The tunnels run to a centralized oculus space complete with a circular domed skylight above, then branch out 80’ in two directions where exits open up to the surrounding vineyards.

Project: Dance Arts Academy, 2014

Project Goals: Construct multiple dance studio spaces, retail spaces and changing rooms in a two story 11,000 square foot structure.

Unique features of the Project: Large open studio spaces with expansive glazing areas for natural daylighting and views. The use of steel bracket trellis elements above windows as direct sunlight shading elements.
Split-faced masonry exterior for maintenance free durability. Long covered entry element for dance student pedestrian drop-off safety. Splitting the structure into two separate building components, with a centralized tower focal point, reduces the scale of the overall building footprint. The two-story glass fenestration design complements the masonry mass modulation of the building form. The glass tower spire brings daylight into the centralized staircase.

Services Provided: Architectural design and construction documentation in a design-build project scenario.

This existing 4,000 s.f. masonry building was renovated for the Arthritis & Osteoporosis Center in a residential neighborhood, in Traverse City, Michigan. The exterior of the building was refaced with composite wood siding, furred out to provide the proper insulation value to the wall assembly. Historic architectural elements of clerestory cupola, covered low profile entrance roof and a colonnade of pilaster elements on the main elevations, tie the building to the adjoining neighborhood. The facility houses a number of exams rooms, physicians, and administrative office, lobby space, reception and employee areas. The renovation corresponds nicely with the historical aspects of the neighborhood and creates a major focal point and entrance element to the city proper.

The two story, 11,000 square foot building engages the vineyard landscape and boldly announces its presence as an iconic element perched along a hilltop on Old Mission Peninsula. The entry passage between stone elements refers to the age of stone hedges and barriers that surrounded vineyards of the past. The two main shed roof designs: one housing production, the other wine tasting and celebration form a duality consistent with the winery nameplate. The tasting room grabs the attention with awe inspired views of East Grand Traverse Bay from one direction, and from the other, provides a window into the intricate inner workings of the winery. The exposed structure compliments the interior and provides a nexus for pulling all of the finishes into a harmonic composition that is both pleasant to view and yet, not overpowering. The Building's design provides an integrated juxtaposition of the daily requirements of a winery allowing the public to engage the structure as a form of art as opposed to a production facility. This approach is carried through to all aspects of the building, including the barrel room, warehousing areas, and production and administrative areas. The low maintenance corrugated metal siding creates an aesthetic reference to agricultural buildings.

"Visually, the winery is like no other. It's a contemporary, boxy, flat-roof structure built of concrete, steel, aluminum and glass -- uncluttered and minimalist." - Detroit News

This project is an 11,500 square foot addition to the existing winery tasting facility. It houses six bed and breakfast guest suites, manager’s suite and a conference-meeting hall for 130 occupants along w/ food preparation & serving facilities. Each guest suite houses a living room with outside covered balcony, kitchenette, bath facilities with large whirlpool tub and linen storage. There is also a separate bedroom that accesses directly into the bath space. High ceilings and glass transoms above terrace doors create a welcoming atmosphere with spectacular views of the vineyards and bay vistas beyond. The meeting hall centers on an open food preparation area to view cooking procedures for continental and banquet dining. The roof trusses above this space were designed to create a centralized clerestory space that expands the ceiling to a 13-foot height. As in the guest suites, a large outdoor balcony, stone verandas and terraces, expand the meeting hall out to the landscape beyond. The lower level of the facility is used for additional wine storage with access to the existing wine making facility. This project was completed in the spring of 2003.
