Hi, my name is Connie Barnard and this is how my Breast Cancer Journey started.
On October 11, 1986 my mom was diagnosed with stage 1 ductal breast cancer. She fought a good fight for 6 years and passed away October 26, 1992. I was 16 years old when she lost her battle to breast cancer. My dad’s mom was also fighting breast cancer and she passed away in November of 1994 when I was 17 years old.
I have done my best to spread breast cancer awareness after losing two very important influences in my life as well as making sure I get my yearly mammograms. In October of 2020 I found a lump I went for my yearly mammogram and nothing showed up on it so they didn’t do the additional tests my primary doctor had ordered. By September of 2021, I started showing symptoms of a different type of breast cancer, a type I had actually never heard of. My doctor got me in the same day I called him about my symptoms. He ordered an ultrasound. Sadly the place refused to do one without doing a mammogram first but my wonderful doctor fought for me and they agreed to do it. The results were exactly what we were all afraid of. The next week I had a biopsy done and on October 13, 2021 I was diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer. I was then sent for a breast MRI and it confirmed that it had spread into my breast tissue and lymph nodes meaning I also had inflammatory breast cancer. I started chemo in December. I had to do 4 different chemo meds. I rang the bell on April 18, 2022. I had a double mastectomy on May 6, 2022. At this point I became cancer free. The next step in my treatment plan was radiation. I did 30 radiation treatments. On May 6, 2026 we celebrated my 4th year of being cancer free. I had a 20% chance of living this long. The odds were definitely stacked against me but by the grace of God, my doctors, and my family I am beating the odds. Today I purchased the coolest thing I could ever purchase - this pink and black S**G Breast Cancer Warrior zero turn mower sold by Motor Sales in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. It is going to help spread awareness in many ways. It will be used at the Bouse Sports Complex in Choctaw, OK to keep the fields looking amazing. It will also be a constant reminder to me to tell my story and to help others going through any type of cancer to NEVER GIVE UP!
