Will Be CLOSED on April 8

Why? In August. 2017, after much planning and preparation, I traveled with three young kids to a national forest in Kentucky with the intention of seeing a total solar eclipse. We had packed the van with a cooler full of food and drinks, camping gear, a fan, a tire repair kit, CB and HAM radios, cameras, a portable potty, and a microwave. It sounds like a lot, but all of it was used. The tire repair kit and air pump were especially useful.

We left early Saturday morning and drove fifteen hours with stops. I was exhausted and pulled off the road as soon as we got to the forest. I folded the back row seats down and converted the van from an automobile to a camper. The following day, we drove to the spot I had chosen to view the eclipse. I had some other family in the area and told them I had the perfect spot. They joined up with us later in the afternoon, and we were glad for the company.

Monday, August 21st, 2017 was the day of the eclipse. People began gathering at my choice location early in the morning. We were nearly surrounded by water under mostly clear skies. The entire eclipse, from first contact to the end, took several hours.

Things really start to happen quickly just before totality. The sunlight loses its intensity and heat. Birds and insects change their sounds. And when our moon, of the perfect angular size, slips in front of the sun... this is where words cease to accurately describe the complex feelings and emotions which will be different for each observer. I can tell you that it appears that the sun has set in all directions simultaneously.

That August day, I decided to close KBS on April 8th, 2024, so that my employees would have the opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse. Being in the path of totality is important. That last 1% is 99% of it. It's worth taking a vacation day. It might even be worth going AWOL for a day. A local total solar eclipse is a rare opportunity to see the greatest show on earth. I would encourage everyone to try to see it. ~Jeremy

FB has informed me that my account will be disabled/deleted on April, 12. This account has been barely operable for more than a year and if I had "posted" my mind I would have been kicked off a long time ago. I DID enjoy using the platform to get information to you but this will likely be my last post.

Before I sign off I will leave you with this:

Take heed that no man deceive you. (Matt 24:4b)

In a nutshell, I believe the time has come to reconnect, face-to-face, with friends, family, and neighbors.

Spring is one month away so I thought I would give a brief update on building materials before the building season really ramps up.

All Things Metal: Metal roofing manufacturers have announced price increases for late February – early March of 8% - 15%. Fasteners, wire, lumber connectors, rebar, mono posts, fencing...all increasing. Last March, copper was $2.08/lb today it is $4.05/lb. All base metals including zinc, aluminum, and nickel have nearly doubled since their low last year. Availability of metal products is still good.

Panels - OSB and Plywood: Most everyone knows by now, OSB has been a runaway train. It has tripled in price since its low last year. There simply isn't enough supply to meet the demand. Essentially all OSB that will be produced this year has been spoken for. I expect inventories to remain thin with no relief in pricing in sight. Plywood has been filling the void left by OSB and its pricing and availability is about the same as OSB.

Doors and Windows: Some price increases. What used to be a two-week lead time is closer to four at the moment.

Drywall: Drywall took a 20% price increase last month and there is talk of another one the first of April.

Insulation: Manufacturers have announced an increase of about 12% for late April. We are seeing lead times of 6 – 8 weeks. That situation may still be deteriorating but we are watching it.

Treated lumber: I was really hoping to see prices go down this winter but demand prevented that from happening. I've been wrong before but I expect prices to remain firm to higher through July. 2x12, 4x6, and 6x6 are the hot items right now.

Framing Lumber: This is FEBRUARY and demand continues to advance prices. Lumber is being traded faster than it is being produced. Again, this is February. Pricing can really only go up from here as the weather improves. Shortages later this year are a real possibility.

Siding/Exterior Products: Major siding brands are 11-13 weeks. Last month we saw a price increase that went into effect immediately and that applied to all existing orders as well. PVC resin shortages affect many products including plumbing fittings and electrical conduit. Aluminum products are about six weeks out.

Composite Decking: Some of the larger name-brands still haven't filled all of their orders from last summer and are not accepting new orders. Some others are more readily available.

I hope that this information will aid you in planning your projects this year. We'll strive to smooth out as many of the availability issues as possible by keeping a watchful eye on inventory with lead times in mind. I intend to keep you informed of any new developments.

Thanks-Jeremy
