The Houston-Pasadena Region has been ranked No. 7 in ozone pollution and No. 8 in year-round particle pollution according to the American Lung Association's 'State of the Air' 2025 report.
Ozone Pollution (aka "bad" ozone) = when nitrous oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air react with sunlight, ground-level ozone is created. Unlike stratospheric ozone, which protects us from UV rays, ground-level ozone pollutes the air we breathe and causes damage to sensitive vegetation and ecosystems we rely on.
Particle Pollution (aka Particulate Matter) = a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets in the air classified as PM10 or PM2.5. Too small for the naked eye to see, PM2.5 is found in gaseous or industrial emissions. The American Lung Association released its State of the Air report April 23, and Houston ranked No. 7 out of 228 metropolitan areas for most polluted cities by ozone.
