Was originally established in San Juan Puerto Rico in 1987 by Herb Libby originally from Bristol Connecticut. Originally performance engineering provided a wide range of machine shop services ranging from cylinder head porting to complete racing engine assemblies. The company also provided welding and custom parts fabrication. Eventually the company expanded to provide complete mechanical and body
shop services as well as trackside support for several successful Championship IMSA road racing teams that raced throughout the Caribbean. The company was also widely respected for its restoration services and had the opportunity to restore a number of incredible American Muscle cars. In 1989 the facilities of Performance Engineering were decimated by hurricane Hugo and that event together with a difficult divorce caused Herb to close the company and eventually return to Connecticut and raise his three sons as a single dad. In the late 90s Herb went to work at Skip Barber Racing School where he enjoyed the opportunity to work for the school in various capacities starting out as a trackside technician and quickly growing into a management role as the Event Coordinator for all of the racing and driving school activities that the Skip Barber Racing School provided at Lime Rock Park and other tracks in the Northeast region. As the years went by the three sons convinced their dad that he should start a new shop here in Connecticut and reopen Performance Engineering Intl. After locating a suitable building in Plymouth, Connecticut Performance Engineering was poised to open again providing a small retail space and modest two bay shop. PEI also wanted to take advantage of the facilities location along the Pequabuck River so they licensed a seasonal outdoor dining venue on the property in order to host weekly cruise nights for local car and motorcycle enthusiasts to get together. Unfortunately hurricanes seem to like to follow this company and with little over a week before a Labor Day weekend cruise night was scheduled to take place hurricane Irene devastated the property and building. The financial losses caused by this event caused a lengthy delay and the opening of this facility. That being said “WER’E BACK!” We will be reopening the facility to the general public beginning in February 2015. We hope to become a place where car owners and serious automotive enthusiast can find the accessories they would like to have for their vehicles as well as provide installation services to our customers for a wide range of automotive products. We also hope to be able to help people get the information they need and connect them with resources and competent people needed in order to provide the services they are looking for.
