Tell a welder it can’t be done, and you’ve just guaranteed they’ll find a way. In pipeline welding and heavy civil construction, difficult conditions, tight spaces, and massive infrastructure projects are part of the job. Skilled welders don’t back down when the work gets challenging - they trust their training, solve the problem, and keep burning until the job is done right. “You can’t” just sounds like thunder before the storm.

Dean’s Certified Welding recently completed all contract welding of steel pipe for the first phase of the re-construction of Anderson Dam in Morgan Hill, CA, the Anderson Dam Tunnel Project. Working for General Contractor Flatiron-Dragados and Owner Valley Water, this contract included an extension of the 8’ diameter steel pipe connecting the tunnel to the bottom of the reservoir which was installed via MTBM; installation of 13’ diameter steel pipe inside of the tunnel and up the shaft; and installation of 11’ diameter steel pipe between the tunnel portal and the Outlet Structure. A unique aspect of this project was the on-site assembly and welding of two laterals with 4” thick crotch plates, one at the intersection of the shaft & tunnel and one at the tunnel portal which bifurcated the pipeline from a single 13’ diameter pipeline to two 11’ lines to the outlet structure. The project team worked extremely hard over the past 6 months, continuously working 12+ hour shifts and having worked every single Saturday on site to accelerate schedule and meet the final contract milestone. We can’t thank our team enough for their efforts, sacrifices, and attention to detail to execute this challenging work to the satisfaction of the Contractor, Engineer, and Owner.

Our team is proud to be performing the welding work supporting the Gateway Tunnel Project - a new two-track passenger rail connection between New Jersey and Manhattan’s Penn Station that will serve Amtrak and New Jersey Transit.

Two massive tunnel boring machines, each equipped with a 28-foot, 8-inch cutterhead and weighing more than 1,680 tons, will excavate approximately one mile through the hard rock beneath New Jersey’s Palisades Cliffs at a pace of roughly 30 feet per day.

Behind infrastructure of this scale are experienced welders, precise fabrication, strong teamwork, and crews committed to getting every detail right. The new Hudson River rail tunnel is scheduled to open in 2035, with rehabilitation of the existing tunnel expected to be completed by 2038. We’re honored to put our skill to work on one of the nation’s most significant heavy civil construction and transportation infrastructure projects.

Pipeline welding and heavy civil construction aren’t built on recognition - they’re built on preparation, precision, teamwork, and a crew committed to doing the job safely and correctly. The water infrastructure may be buried underground, but the quality of the work will speak for itself for decades.
