A study by FitRated has revealed that gym equipment harbors significantly more bacteria than many common surfaces, posing health risks to users. Tests showed that treadmills, bikes, and free weights contain over a million germs per square inch. Free weights carried 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, while treadmills had 74 times more than a public bathroom faucet. Identified microbes included gram-positive cocci, linked to skin infections, and antibiotic-resistant gram-negative rods. Chelsea Freeburn of FitRated noted that gym machines, used by large numbers of people, can become breeding grounds for bacteria if not disinfected. Despite gyms providing wipes, many users neglect to clean machines before or after workouts. Experts recommend wiping down equipment, washing hands with antibacterial soap, and avoiding face contact during exercise to lower risks. The findings highlight the importance of hygiene in communal workout spaces.
