Happy November! It is starting to get chilly and it is getting darker earlier in the day! Here are our tips on Winterizing your flock and keeping those hard working girls comfortable:

🐥Chickens need 14 hours of light per day- total light hours including natural and artifical light- to maintain egg production in the fall/winter months

🐣Increase protein in the winter to maintain their weight- supplemental increase in scratch grains, grubs, etc-

🐥 Keep the coop dry and draft free

🐣Increase depth of bedding on the floor of the coop to insulate from the floor

🐥Check for worms in f***l matter and for signs of mites/lice. There is an increased chance of mites/lice infestations in the autumn and winter months. https://www.theveterinarynurse.com/content/clinical/common-poultry-parasites-of-backyard-hens/

🐣Keep waterers clear of ice

🐥Check coop for rodent entry points and keep your flock away from wild waterfowl. Practicing good biosecurity is one of the most important things you can do for your flock, here are some great tips from the USDA Defend the Flock Program: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/defend-the-flock/resources

We can't believe that October is almost over! 🐥🎃🍂🍁We are well into Fall and that brings in Migrations of Waterfowl and an increased risk of HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza,) being prepared and maintaining consistent, well-defined biosecurity protocols is the best way to protect your flock, ODA has a great article on HPAI on their website and we highly recommend checking it out here: https://www.oregon.gov/oda/animal-health-feeds-livestock-id/animal-diseases/avian-influenza/Pages/hpai-poultry.aspx

They also have a great Fall Specific Poultry Biosecurity Checklist that we have posted before, check that out here: https://www.oregon.gov/oda/Documents/Publications/AnimalHealth/Fall-Specific%20Poultry%20Biosecurity%20Checklist.pdf?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

Looking for another resource? The Defend the Flock Resource Center on the USDA website is also a great source of information: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/defend-the-flock/resources

Here is another helpful infographic from Poultry DVMs, if you are looking at expanding or building your run, this is important info to help protect your flock!

Just a handy fencing material comparison chart focused on predator exclusion for backyard chickens, ducks and other fowl. The most notable takeaways are:
🐓Poultry netting is useless. It will not keep your flock safe from any predators or pests.
🐓1/4" hardware cloth is the superior choice to help protect your chickens but since it is a flexible material, it must have enough support points to provide the rigidity needed to withstand forces exerted by predators.

🐓Chainlink fencing provides a good base structure, but still needs to be reinforced with hardware cloth to minimize risk of certain common predators (raccoons, minks, weasels, and snakes) and small rodents (rats and mice).
🐓Even seemingly small gaps and holes can serve as entry points for predators.
For more detailed information for how to properly predator proof please refer to our infographic on our website - https://poultrydvm.com/featured-infographic/tips-for-protecting-poultry-from-predators
