A proud moment for EDR this Memorial Day.

EDR’s Civil Engineering Practice Leader of our Hyannis office, Russ Kleekamp, delivered the keynote address at the ceremony held at Veterans Memorial Park in Orleans, MA. As a Marine Veteran himself, Russ spoke with a personal perspective on the occasion, and we are honored to have him represent our team on this project.

What began as “a drawing on the back of a napkin” has become the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Park, with a meaningful community space featuring walkways, bench seating, new memorials, and engraved bricks honoring America’s veterans.

We are proud to support projects that create lasting places of remembrance, and we thank all who have served.

Anchoring the Boonville Historic District in Boonville, New York, Hulbert House Taproom and Kitchen is the most well-known and recognizable building in the village, standing as the only extant stone inn in Oneida County.

The circa-1812 inn has long been an important way station for travelers between Watertown and Utica, as well as for visitors to the more remote regions of the Adirondacks. Today, it houses a taproom and apartments for seasonal workers in the Adirondacks and Tug Hill.

EDR's historic preservation team recently prepared Part 1 and Part 2 Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit (HRTC) Applications to support the rehabilitation of the inn's first-floor event spaces, ensuring Hulbert House will remain at the center of community life in Boonville.

Our team had the pleasure of attending the Onondaga Historical Association's OHA Medal Breakfast to celebrate the individuals and organizations who have been passionate about preserving and representing Syracuse's history.

Listening to honorees share decades of involvement in this community was a powerful reminder that a better environment isn't built overnight. It's built by people who care deeply about where they live, showing up year after year to protect the history that makes Syracuse a place worth calling home.

We are proud to be a sponsor of this annual event and honored to support an organization whose work reflects our own commitment to creating and sustaining for our communities.

The Coughlin Brothers–Babson Brothers Building in Syracuse has had quite a life. Built in 1927, it began as a confectionery producing chocolate, candy, and marshmallows before WWII sugar rationing closed it down. It later housed Babson Brothers, manufacturing the patented Surge Milker and dairy equipment, followed by Syracuse Restaurant Supply and the Popcorn Supply Company.

Now, EDR’s historic preservation team has helped shape its next chapter by preparing the Part 1 Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit (HRTC) application and a Nomination to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

Projects like this remind us why Historic matters. It’s the people and the work behind the scenes that keep our history standing.

What was once a factory producing automotive and railway parts for the Lipe-Rollway Co. has been transformed into a modern public safety complex for the Syracuse Police Department and
Syracuse Fire Department. The project uses state and federal Historic Tax Credits to preserve the building’s historic character while creating updated office, support, and training spaces for both departments.

EDR’s historic preservation team worked closely with the development team and the New York State Historic Preservation Office to ensure the building's historic character was maintained while meeting the specialized needs of a public safety complex. Code compliance, demolition of failing auxiliary structures, and removal of toxic materials were factored into the balance of historic rehabilitation, and EDR’s expertise helped the development team successfully navigate these challenges.

Projects like this show how historic preservation can do more than restore buildings. It can help strengthen communities, support investment, and give historic spaces renewed purpose.

Historic Preservation Month is all about celebrating the people who help preserve and tell the stories of our communities.

Recently, Kristen Olson, EDR Historic Preservation Project Manager, presented at the Association of Public Historians (APHNYS) Region 9 meeting on “Major Renewable Energy Projects – How to Participate and Secure Funding for Historic Preservation Projects in Your Community.”

County, town, and village historians are often key stakeholders in the preparation of historic resources surveys and mitigation plans for renewable energy projects. Mitigation funding, paid by energy developers to offset adverse visual impacts to historic resources, is a unique opportunity for the rural communities that typically host wind and solar projects. Kristen’s presentation explained the process and timeline of the survey and mitigation planning steps, with the goal of empowering municipal historians to successfully advocate for and preserve historic places in their communities.

We’re proud to see EDR staff sharing their knowledge, experience, and passion for preservation!

We had a great time at the Ohio Energy Project Career Fair in Newark, Ohio!

EDR was excited to connect with students and emerging professionals interested in energy-focused careers.

The highlight of the day was EDR's Holly Karg engaging directly with students about career paths, project work, and what opportunities in our field look like.

We enjoyed the conversations, the questions, and the enthusiasm from everyone we met, and we’re always glad to share more about what’s ahead at EDR!

Happy Historic Preservation Month!

From historic landmarks to neighborhood main streets, preservation helps keep the story alive for future generations to experience. This month, we’re proud to introduce some of the people at EDR who help protect, document, and celebrate the places that connect us to our past while shaping stronger communities for the future.

EDR’s historic preservation experts assist with historic resource surveys, Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit applications, National Register of Historic Places nominations, landscape and site design, and archaeological investigations.

Because every building, street, and landmark has a story worth preserving.

We’re wrapping up World Landscape Architecture Month with a little extra appreciation for the heart behind the work. At EDR, our landscape architects help carry projects from vision to reality, shaping spaces that feel thoughtful, connected, and built for the communities they serve.

Aaron Lehman, RLA, EDR Project Manager, explains what landscape architecture in action looks like:

Landscape architecture does not end in an office or with a design on paper. Our work continues in the field, overseeing construction and ensuring that design intent is carried through to reality.

This often means adapting to unforeseen site conditions and working closely with contractors to resolve necessary design changes in real time. A landscape architect must think quickly and remain flexible to keep projects on schedule and within budget.

Just as important is maintaining safety throughout construction. This includes protecting workers, owners, and the general public, maintaining pedestrian access to buildings, and ensuring continued access to essential services such as drinking water in occupied facilities.
