Q: In addition to optical bonding, what other type of display enhancements does IEE do?

A: Optical bonding is one process that strengthens and ruggedizes a display. Additional techniques include using anti-glare, backlighting systems, transflective screens and touchscreens that minimize light loss. Learn more about IEE Optical Enhancements here.

Q: What type of optical bonding does IEE do?

A: Optical bonding is a process in which a layer of adhesive is used to bond the display module to the cover glass or touch screen, reducing the air gap between them and improving visibility in bright or outdoor environments. Rugged military cockpit displays often use optical bonding to enhance durability and reduce the risk of damage from shock, vibration, and extreme temperatures.

IEE is expert in:
Full lamination
Optically Clear Adhesive (OCA)
EMI Shielding
Anti-reflective coatings
Impact resistant glass

Q: I have a Form-Fit-Function type application challenge. Can you work within the existing dimensions and update my Cathode Ray Technology (CRT) to an LED display solution?

A: Form-Fit-Function CRT replacement is one of IEE’s strengths and competitive advantages. We specialize in backward and forward compatibility, and put more capability into the same footprint.

Q: What different types of touch-screen features does IEE offer?

A: Rugged military displays for cockpits typically use touch screens with specialized features designed to withstand harsh environments and facilitate ease of use. IEE offers the following touch-screen options:
1. Resistive touch screens: These screens use a flexible top layer that deforms slightly when pressed, creating a change in electrical current that is detected by the touch screen. Resistive touch screens are durable and can be used with gloves or styluses.
2. Capacitive touch screens: These screens use a conductive material, such as a person's finger, to detect changes in electrical current caused by touching the screen. Capacitive touch screens are more sensitive than resistive screens, but less sensitive with gloves or styluses.
3. Infrared touch screens: These screens use a grid of infrared sensors to detect changes in light caused by touching the screen. Infrared touch screens are highly durable and can be used with gloves or styluses.
4. Optical touch screens: These screens use a camera or other optical sensor to detect changes in light caused by touching the screen. Optical touch screens are highly accurate and can be used with gloves or styluses.
5. Projected capacitive touch screens: These screens use a grid of electrodes to detect changes in electrical current caused by touching the screen. Projected capacitive touch screens are highly durable and sensitive.
6. Haptic feedback: This feature provides tactile feedback in response to touch, such as a vibration or click sensation, to improve usability and reduce errors.
Overall, the specific type of touch screen feature used on a rugged military display will depend on the specific requirements and use case of the display.

Q: What type of development timeline can I expect when working with IEE?
A: IEE is known for its rapid prototyping and has delivered a display in nine weeks from concept (PRD) to aircraft installation.

This is accomplished with our in-house design engineers, a dedicated engineering lab and prototype assembly unit, along with other in-house test facilities and machine shop.

Generally, you can expect days to mechanical samples (support for conceptual review), weeks to operational prototypes (support for software system integration), and months to field-able assets (DVT, Qualification and Transition to full-rate production).

Let's talk about your plans. Contact Steve Motter: [email protected] or call 818-787-0311 x327.
