Job Summary:
The TAB Technician is responsible for verifying and optimizing HVAC system performance to ensure compliance with design intent, project specifications, and applicable industry standards. This position involves conducting comprehensive performance testing on airside and hydronic systems, interpreting mechanical drawings and technical documentation, and producing accurate, detailed reports of all testing and balancing activities.
The TAB Technician plays a critical role in overall project success by identifying system deficiencies, making precise adjustments to achieve optimal system performance, and confirming compliance with National Balancing Commission (NBC) procedural standards. This role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, exceptional attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, standards-driven work.
Successful candidates will demonstrate technical competence, professionalism in the field, and a willingness to pursue continuous learning to stay current with evolving HVAC technologies, testing methodologies, and industry best practices.
Job Responsibilities:
Perform testing, adjusting, and balancing of HVAC airside and hydronic systems in accordance with project specifications and applicable industry standards.
Measure and verify system performance parameters, including airflow, water flow, temperature, pressure, and rotational speed, using calibrated testing instruments.
Interpret and apply mechanical drawings, schedules, control diagrams, and technical specifications to ensure systems are tested against design intent.
Adjust HVAC components such as dampers, valves, VAV boxes, pumps, and fans to achieve specified performance criteria.
Identify, document, and communicate system deficiencies, operational issues, and non-conforming conditions to project stakeholders.
Prepare accurate, detailed TAB reports, including field data, calculations, observations, and compliance documentation.
Verify proper operation of HVAC equipment under various operating modes, including occupied, unoccupied, heating, cooling, and economizer modes.
Coordinate TAB activities with controls contractors, mechanical contractors, engineers, and commissioning teams to support overall project completion.
Maintain and properly use testing and balancing instruments, ensuring equipment calibration and adherence to safety procedures.
Comply with all applicable National Balancing Commission (NBC) procedural standards, company quality control requirements, and jobsite safety policies.
Prepare for each project by reviewing the system design and assembling the necessary test forms for documentation.
Requirements:
Must be 18 years old and High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school, apprenticeship, or documents HVAC/TAB field experience preferred.
Must have a valid driving license and a clean driving record.
Must be able to work at heights and off of ladders / lifts.
Strong mathematical skills for completing basic and advanced equations.
Proactively participate in the company’s training program. This training program is designed to support team member success and improve customer satisfaction.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schedules, specifications and submittals.
Capability to analyze measured data, identify system deficiencies and recommend or implement corrective adjustments.
Must be able to use a computer (excel and word) for reporting
Demonstrated ability to perform precise measurements and maintain compliance with project requirements and quality control procedures.
Strong communication skills, reliability, ability to work independently or as part of a team, and commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Must be honest and have high integrity.
Pass random drug test.
Be able to lift or carry up to 40lbs (on a few occasions)
