Did you know that flexible endoscopes are linked to more infection outbreaks than almost any other reusable medical device? Because of their complex internal lumens and narrow channels, thorough reprocessing is a critical, zero-compromise standard for patient safety.

1️⃣ Point-of-Use Cleaning: Reprocessing begins immediately in the procedure room. Wiping the scope and flushing channels removes gross organic soils before they dry and form resilient biofilms.
2️⃣ Transportation: Safely securing and clearly labeling contaminated equipment protects staff and prevents cross-contamination while moving items to the dirty utility room.
3️⃣ Thorough Manual Cleaning: Brushing, flushing, and rinsing every single channel in an enzymatic bath. Remember: Disinfection cannot happen if mechanical debris blocks the chemical agents!
4️⃣ High-Level Disinfection (HLD): Full, unrestricted immersion in validated solutions like Glutaraldehyde or Peracetic Acid. Adhering strictly to required soaking times and temperatures destroys vegetative bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mycobacteria.
5️⃣ Rinsing: Removing chemical residues completely by flushing the scope with sterile or ultra-filtered water.
6️⃣ Proper Drying & Storage: This is where many errors occur! Scopes must be dried completely with forced air and hung vertically in a specialized, ventilated cabinet. Any lingering moisture becomes a breeding ground for bacterial growth.
