We posted this on American Grip on Instagram- Today.

While this isn’t the normal content we post but our family here at American Grip wanted to acknowledge the passing of Brad Hess. Brad was buried over the weekend on Saturday September 26, 2026 at Eternal Valley next to his father Norman Hess.

Norman Senior founded Norms Studio Equipment in 1978. Not many people know the history of Norms and American but the two companies were originally run by family. Norman and his son Brad ran Norms while Phil and Lance ran American.

Brad is survived by his step son Shawn and his step brother, our owner, Lance. He was 83 years old.

He will be remembered by his love of his Jaguar XKE, his classic haircut, rose colored glasses, his love of golf and tennis and his warm heart.

Good Morning. It’s 4.45 when I arrive. Temp is 64 outside anda Balmy 84 in my out building.
214 of the RDRR Top Rec Holder…. It’s slow goin….but not as slow as the Large Riser Casting at like 53 min Each.
Also, the Black Hub for the Blue Forks is now at 123 or 41 Stands worth. The Hubs are 2 Stands an Hour
I also ran overnight the 1-1/4” Brass Shoes for the # 23 Casting. It ran 8-3/4 hours unattended at I left Sunday at 8pm only to return this morning at 4.45. Parts are still perfect

Well here I am at 5am with 1 more day till the 4th of July or Independence Day.
I’m excited, I reached 50 RDRR Top Receiver Holder. Only 183 to go. I Ordered 6 - 3-1/2” x 12’ or 144”Round Solid Bars. Each bar yields 39 pcs. Finished part is 3.350 long. Material is ordered 3.390 -0 + .020 ( we allow .020 or 4 sheets of paper thick to clean up each end….thats not a lot ) then we allow for a saw blade of .210 to .250. So you add the 3.390 + .225 average thickness = 3.615. You divide 144” / 3.615 = 39.8 or 39 PC. Multiply the 39 pcs x 6 Bars = 234 pcs. Material cost is 11.00 plus 20 plus Min Machine Time, Tumbling & Black Anodize. Then I have 234 Stands that now have The Top Receiver Holder AKA - RDRR Top Slug.
After the 20 Plus Min to Machine, each part has to be checked 4 different ways -
1 - 1-3/8 Receiver fits in the Top Hole.
2 - 1/4-20 Button Head Screw Threads are Good ( this attaches the Top Rec Holder to the 3-1/2” top tube.
3 - SS KeenSert Threads are Good ( this is where the 2 Red Handles tighten onto the 1-1/8” Pin found on Lights or our CenterHead )
4 - 3/8-16 tapped holes ( 2 of them that secure the 1-3/8 Rec is attached to the Top Rec Holder )

Another….

This Becomes That -

3-1/2” Round Solid Alum from Kaiser Select Precision Made in USA. This Alum is what we use to make our RDRR’s Top Receiver Holder.

Good Morning. Started a few min early today. I have 122 sets of Lollipop # 6 & # 8. Finally went home at 8.50 last night. Will finish up the Top Swivels today and will start getting ready for the Top Delta. Will need to remove the 4 Vises and clean the table, slots & Vises. Reinstall the 2 Vises with the special Bitter Jaws. Then the vises need to be parallel so the Fixture Can be installed. So if I get out of here by 8.30 - 9 I’ll be happy. Then we can run opp 1.

Missed CineGear this year. Working 5am to 9pm daily including weekends. I’m making more Lollipop Disks & Top Swivels….again. The Lollipop Disks, They Machine really slow. 1 set every 35 min. Only get 28 sets in 16 hours. Arrived at 4.38 this morning. I now have 93 sets done. It’s like watching Water Melt on a 40 degree day…. But I like that 93 sets are better than the 64 I started with yesterday.
The Top Swivels will finish up on Monday & we will reload for the Top Delta Plates for BOA’s & RDRR’s. Same part just different Serial Numbers when we Laser them after they get Grained and then Black Anodized. Those take even longer. It’s like 45 min opp 1 on 1 side then 15 min opp 2.

I want to give a shout out to Steve & the Boys from Atlas Lighting & ( Grip ) from Chicago who came by to say hi before CineGear.

I was able to show them how the Top Swivels ( for RDRR, BOA & BKBD’s crank stands ) are machined that I’m running on the VF4 CNC & the Lollipop Disks on the other VF4. We also saw the Alum Black Blocks all 4 which are different for the Leg Triangulation Braces being machined. Also, every time Steve turned to look at something else… all he saw was DoorWay Dolly parts being machined - the C-Bracket for the Axles, the C-bracket finished and Plated. The welded Chassis or the Blue Painted Chassis upstairs or the Wood Wings with the Blue Carpet or the Varnished Deck or The raw & Painted Push Bar and the Steering Bar…. It was like the shop was saying…..Steve you need a New American Grip Doorway Dolly that has 1” Baltic Birch Plywood….maybe Santa will bring you 1. Just Sayin…
