It's actually a three-dimensional decision involving gauge, alloy chemistry, and temper (how the metal was heat-treated). A pharmaceutical blister pack needs completely different properties than an EMI shield in electronics — even if they look similar to the naked eye.
The bigger challenge? The industry uses microns, mils, inches, and "gauge" interchangeably, creating massive confusion for anyone trying to make a precise technical decision.
