For the first time in history, the Midwest Premium surpassed $1.00/lb.—transforming what used to be a modest surcharge into the dominant cost driver in your delivered aluminum price.

Your total aluminum cost has always been LME base price + Midwest Premium. Historically, that premium was background noise—maybe 10-15% of your total cost. In 2026, it's rewriting the entire equation.

If you're buying aluminum in 2026, you've probably noticed something strange: your costs keep climbing even though global forecasts show plenty of supply. What's happening?

It comes down to understanding two numbers: the London Metal Exchange (LME) price and the Midwest Premium (MWP). For years, the MWP was just a small regional add-on—maybe 10-15% of your total cost. Not anymore.

In 2026, the MWP has crossed $1.00 per pound for the first time ever. Combined with 50% tariffs on imports, it's now the dominant factor in what you actually pay. The LME base price? It's become almost secondary.

This shift is squeezing margins for anyone on fixed-price contracts or trying to forecast costs for new projects. The old playbook of tracking LME futures and calling it a day just doesn't work anymore.
