A joint operation between the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard is underway to return the 12,000-lb Delaware Bay North Approach Lighted Buoy 2 (R2) to station. The buoy is currently off the beach and should be back on station soon.

This is a good reminder that Aids to Navigation can and do go missing or move off station, especially after a storm. R2 is still listed as missing in the current Local Notice to Mariners:

Two hundred years on, the Erie Canal and still hauling freight.

Championed by DeWitt Clinton, U.S. Senator, Mayor of New York City, and Governor of New York, the canal opened on October 26, 1825, and stretching 363 miles from the Hudson River west to Lake Erie.

Today Clinton's ditch is still moving freight efficiently and keeps loads off our roads and bridges.
