We loved having Emma Gorton with us this past summer! She brought energy, curiosity, and a fresh perspective. Here’s to the next generation of engineers going places like Emma!
Today, we are spotlighting Emma Gorton, a fourth-year civil engineering student. In the past three summers, she had the opportunity to intern with various firms in the St. Louis region. This summer, she was the rotating intern at Horner & Shifrin, where she explored the various civil engineering disciplines.
During her internship, Emma had the chance to see how classroom concepts come to life in real projects. She learned what parts of the profession challenge and excite her most, discovered a strong interest in transportation and civil site work, and gained confidence by seeing how engineers analyze problems, develop solutions, and collaborate with clients. Just as importantly, she expanded her network of mentors—especially women in leadership—who helped her envision a future in the field where her strengths, personality, and goals truly fit.
Emma is also involved in Fraternity and Sorority Life at SLU and is a member of the ASCE SLU award-winning concrete bowling team.
