Knowing what’s underground can prevent surprises during excavation.

Calling 811 helps identify the location of public utilities, however encountering private utilities during excavation can also cause serious injury and damage. Underground private utilities, abandoned infrastructure, and undocumented improvements may not appear on existing records and that's where Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) becomes critical.

Technologies such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), electromagnetic locating, and radio frequency are used by utility engineers to identify and map underground utilities before excavation starts. This information helps project teams better plan construction activities, avoid conflicts, and reduce the risk of utility strikes, delays, and unexpected costs.

SCI Engineering is proud to share that the Route W Slide Repair project with MoDOT received a 2025 National Recognition Award from ACEC National.

Following a landslide that caused a roadway failure along Route W in Jefferson County in April 2025, SCI’s geotechnical team provided rapid response and innovative solutions to address complex site conditions and to restore this critical roadway.

We’re honored to see this project recognized on a national level and grateful to the Missouri Department of Transportation for the opportunity to support this important work.

SCI team members Breanna Henderson and Olha Patrick recently represented SCI Engineering at the Society for American Archaeology's Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California.

Breanna presented her cave archaeology research conducted at Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho through her work with CAIRN - Cave Archaeology Investigation & Research Network and the Cave Research Foundation (CRF).

While attending the conference, Breanna and Olha also volunteered, participated in workshops, networked with archaeology professionals from across the country, and explored several iconic stops along their cross-country road trip, including Joshua Tree National Park, Muir Woods, and the Badlands.
