Illinois played an important role in the Revolutionary War, serving as a key frontier region along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.

This fascinating map from the Illinois State Genealogical Society traces troop movements from 1780–1783 and highlights American outposts at St. Louis, Cahokia, Kaskaskia, Fort Jefferson, and Vincennes. The forts at Kaskaskia and Vincennes were famously captured by George Rogers Clark, helping secure the Northwest Territory for the young United States.

As we explore Illinois history, it's a reminder of how geography, mapping, and an understanding of the land have shaped our nation from the very beginning.

Applications are open for the 2026 NSPS Young Surveyors Network (YSN) National Mentorship Program. Hurry while spaces last.

This program connects students and early-career professionals with experienced surveyors and geospatial professionals across the country, in structured, 1-on-1 pairings designed around shared goals and interests.

Topics include ethics and professionalism, licensure and certification, leadership, industry and emerging technology, business ownership, and more.

The 2026 program is capped at 250 participants, up from 100+ last year. Early applications are encouraged.
