The systems people rely on most are often the ones they never think about.

Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and lighting systems all play a critical role in how buildings function every day, from comfort and efficiency to visibility, life safety, and long-term performance.

Thoughtful engineering is about more than individual systems. It’s about how everything works together within the built environment.

Keep Alderson Engineering in mind for your next project.

Some building systems are designed for comfort and performance. Others are designed to protect people.

Fire protection engineering plays a critical role in how buildings respond during emergencies, requiring coordination across architecture, structure, mechanical systems, and life safety requirements throughout the design process.

According to NFPA research, civilian death rates are significantly lower in fires where automatic sprinkler systems are present, with many studies showing reductions approaching 80–90% depending on occupancy type and reporting period.

That level of responsibility is why coordination, accuracy, and thoughtful design matter on every project.

Exciting things are taking shape in Ardmore.

Mike Simmonds from the Alderon Engineering team attended the groundbreaking ceremony for what will now be known as The Piazza at Ardmore.

We’re excited to be part of a project that will contribute to the continued growth and evolution of the community, and we look forward to seeing the vision come to life as construction progresses.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this project forward.

At Alderson Engineering, we believe the future of engineering isn’t just about the buildings we design, it’s about the people we inspire. One of our core goals is to mentor and encourage the next generation of engineers, helping them see how accuracy, collaboration, and thoughtful design can shape a better world.

Through our long-standing participation in the Drexel University Co-op program and by welcoming summer interns to our team each year, we provide hands-on learning experiences that support emerging talent in meaningful ways.

We’re proud to share our passion with the engineers of tomorrow because inspiring the next generation is one of the most important projects we’ll ever work on.

Every building starts long before construction begins.

Before concrete is poured or steel is erected, projects begin with coordination, planning, problem-solving, and thousands of decisions made across multiple disciplines. Architecture, engineering, ownership, and construction all influence one another throughout the process.

From early concepts to active construction, successful projects are shaped through collaboration. Buildings are team projects.

One change in ceiling height can affect multiple trades.

What appears to be a simple architectural adjustment can affect lighting layouts, duct routing, sprinkler coverage, structural coordination, clearances, and more. That’s why coordination matters long before construction begins.

Well-coordinated spaces aren’t accidental. They’re the result of collaboration between architecture, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and structural systems. The goal isn’t for engineering systems to compete with the architecture. It’s for everything to work together seamlessly within the space.

Our team is growing... We’re pleased to welcome Michelle Johnson, CLD, Assoc. IALD to Alderson Engineering as a Lighting Designer II.

Michelle brings a background in both electrical engineering and interior design, with experience across a range of project types, including mixed-use, residential, restaurant, and senior living environments. Her work focuses on how lighting supports both the technical performance and overall experience of a space.

Michelle is based in Ohio and joins the team with a strong interest in thoughtful, well-integrated lighting design.

Outside of work, she enjoys reading, spending time with family, designing jewelry, and essential oils.

Please join us in welcoming Michelle to the Alderson Engineering team!

Good design starts with coordination and system integration.

Every system in a building is connected. Routing, clearances, and performance all have to be considered together, not separately. That’s where real coordination happens. Not just making things fit, but making sure they function as a complete system.
