J.E. Burton Construction Company

J.E. Burton Construction Company J. E. Burton Construction is a third-generation family owned and operated, fully licensed, bonded and insured, general contractor in Virginia and North Carolina.

Since our beginning in 1937, we have prided ourselves in building our clients success by building lasting value into their facilities. We were the first in the southside to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified. As we enter our 88th year in 2025, we have grown to include over 40 full-time field and office staff trained and educated in completing commercial, industrial,

and institutional construction projects on time, on budget, and of the highest quality. Over the years we have also given back to our community not only by providing quality construction but also in supporting our local YMCA, Cancer Association, Dixie Youth Baseball/Softball, and Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation to name a few. We are always looking for opportunities to improve our skills and to improve our community. At JE Burton Construction, we’re proud to continue our month‑long celebration of Black History Month by highlighting the stories and places that help define the strength of Halifax County.

This week, we’re shining a light on the Halifax County African American Heritage Trail—a collection of historic sites that honor the leaders, builders, and community members whose contributions still shape our region today. Their dedication, courage, and craftsmanship continue to inspire the work we do and the communities we support.

As we reflect on this legacy, we remain committed to building with purpose, honoring history, and supporting a future where every story is recognized and valued.

🌟 Black History Month: Honoring Halifax County’s Legacy

In Halifax County, we proudly celebrate the visionaries who built opportunity where none existed. Today, we honor Professor Caleb Robinson—an educator born in Jamaica in 1864 who founded the McKinley Institute and laid the groundwork for what became the Meadville Community Center.
Though no official quotes survive, historical records tell us that Robinson expressed a powerful dream: A community gathering place devoted to educating and uplifting African Americans.

This vision—documented by the organizations that carried it forward—became the heart of the Meadville Community Center, which continues to enrich Halifax County today.

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor leaders like Professor Robinson whose dedication to education, empowerment, and community uplift still resonates throughout Halifax County.

Together, we celebrate the past and build a brighter future.
🖤💛💙
