During the event, Simon Jones, Director of Aerospace and Low Force Business Development, presented on recent advancements and ongoing projects involving Low Force Friction Welding. Simon also served as a featured panelist on discussions focused on Linear Friction Welding.

Last Friday, MTI officially celebrated its 𝟭𝟬𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 alongside employees, retirees, customers, vendors, family members, and community partners who have all played a role in our story.

During the event, MTI was honored to 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 in recognition of a century of manufacturing, engineering, and community impact rooted in South Bend, Indiana.

Reaching 100 years is an achievement few companies experience. It is estimated that only 𝟬.𝟱% of businesses make it to a century. Rarer still are companies that remain in the same city, the same building, and under the same family ownership throughout that journey. MTI is proud to be part of that small group.

What began in 1926 as Adams Engineering has grown into a global friction welding company serving industries around the world, but this milestone was never achieved alone. It was built over generations by committed employees, customers who trusted us with their challenges, partners who grew alongside us, and a community that supported us every step of the way.

To everyone who joined us in celebrating this occasion, thank you. Your presence was a reminder that 100 years is not just a company milestone, but the result of relationships and trust built over time.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 and 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗲 of the South Bend Regional Chamber for sharing thoughtful remarks and helping us commemorate this special day.

Today, MTI was honored to welcome 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗬𝗮𝗸𝘆𝗺 to our South Bend facility.

Ahead of our centennial celebration, he took time to personally acknowledge the Adams family and the entire MTI team for reaching 100 years of continuous operation. During his visit, he presented MTI with a 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 in recognition of this milestone.

Following the presentation, he toured our facility to see firsthand the work that we do today and the capabilities that continue to drive us forward.

Reaching 100 years is the result of generations of 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, and a shared focus on 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 for our customers. We are grateful for the recognition and proud of the legacy we continue to build 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

100 YEARS OF INGENUITY - FROM AEI TO MTI

Every company has moments that shape its future.

This month, we hear from 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗘𝗢 Dan Adams as he reflects on the transition from 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 to 𝗠𝗧𝗜 that took place in 1976. That path ultimately led to a defining transition: the purchase of Inertia Friction Welding technology from Caterpillar.

With the successful return of the 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗜 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, we are reminded of what decades of innovation and collaboration can achieve.

MTI is proud to contribute to programs like this through multiple Friction Welding solutions. Our Vertical Rotary Friction Welder produces critical components for the 𝗥𝗦-𝟮𝟱 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, while our Vertical Weld Tool enables Friction Stir Welding of the conical structures used in the 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿.

When one door 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙨, innovation 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙨 another.

A customer in the defense industry recently faced a significant challenge: the machine used for joining a large critical flight component had been fully decommissioned, leaving no commercially approved replacement available. Because joint strength was a key requirement, MTI’s 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 technology quickly emerged as the leading solution.

To validate the solution, MTI followed its proven phased 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 process, beginning with a 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁. In this phase, our team identifies the metallurgical and mechanical properties required for a successful weld – such as tensile strength, fatigue performance, HAZ characteristics, and microstructure. With those requirements defined, we then worked closely with the customer in the next phase to produce smaller, scaled coupon components that allowed us to prove the Low Force process using existing tooling. This 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹-𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 phase accelerates learning, reduces risk, and confirms suitability for the application.

Post-weld inspection and validation confirmed MTI’s Low Force process not only met but 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 the customer’s strength requirements.

With this data in hand, MTI’s engineering team designed a 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺 Low Force Friction Welding solution and advanced to the next phase for 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: building the dedicated Low Force production machine that will deliver this capability. Once complete, the machine will be operated by MTI’s Manufacturing Services team, ensuring consistent process ex*****on and long-term production support.

This fully integrated path combining custom engineering, machine development, and full operational ex*****on, demonstrates how MTI solves lifecycle and obsolescence challenges when standard solutions no longer exist.
