Customer project: wraparound porch in Missouri 🏡

This customer sampled three Q8 colors (Natural Base, Light Gold and Medium Gold) before choosing Light Gold 02 for the cedar posts and trim. Great result!

That's the way to do it: test a sample on your own wood before you buy for the whole project.

Chinking or caulk? It depends on where it's going on your log home.

🪵 Between the logs → chinking. Chinking fills the joints between your logs with that textured, mortar-look band. It moves with the logs as they expand and shrink, so the seal holds.

🪟 Checks, cracks and trim → caulk. Use caulk to seal log checks and cracks, around doors and windows, along corner boards, and where wood meets the chimney. That keeps water, air and bugs out.

We like Sashco Log Jam for chinking and Sashco Log Builder for caulk.

Customer before and after 🪵

This log home in New York was weathered and gray. The owner refinished it with Outlast Q8 Log Oil in Medium Gold 03. Same wall, about 10 days apart.

He liked the result enough that he just ordered another pail to keep going.

Is it time to re-stain? 🪵

Not sure if your logs need a new coat? Check for three things:
• Water soaks in instead of beading up
• Color has faded or turned gray, especially on the south and west walls
• You can feel bare, rough wood when you run a hand over it

Two out of three? Plan to recoat in the next season.

Before and after: this customer's ranch log home, refinished with Outlast Q8 Log Oil in Natural Base 01. Top photo is before, the two below are after.

Q8 comes in 7 colors: Natural Base, Light Gold, Medium Gold, Medium Reddish Brown, Dark Brown, Barn Gray and Clear. The same color can look very different depending on wood species, age and sun exposure, so our advice is simple: order a sample and test it on a spot that's out of sight before you commit to the whole house. It's the cheapest insurance in log home care.

🍂 Fall walk-around checklist

Before winter shows up, take 20 minutes and walk around your log home:
✅ Look for gaps or cracks in your chinking and caulking
✅ Check the lower log courses, corners and log ends. They take the most water.
✅ Splash some water on the logs. If it soaks in instead of beading up, the finish is worn out.
✅ Clean the gutters and make sure downspouts carry water away from the walls
✅ Keep firewood stacked away from the house

The right conditions make all the difference.

Applying stain or log oil when temperatures are moderate and the surface is dry helps ensure even absorption, better adhesion, and a finish that lasts longer. Avoid working in direct hot sun or when rain is expected to get the best results from your project.

Plan smart. Finish strong.
