A manufacturer came to Groschopp looking for a compact motor solution to automate heavy prison doors weighing between 200 and 1,200 lbs.

Some challenges included:
• High torque for smooth operation
• Tight installation space
• Back-drivability for manual operation during power outages
• Reliable performance

Groschopp developed a brushed DC motor paired with a 5:1 right-angle gearbox to meet the torque requirements while fitting within the tight space. The solution was tested through 1.6 million cycles to ensure reliable performance.

Some common sources of efficiency loss:
- Friction Losses: Caused by resistance from parts like bearings, bushings, and brushes.
- Windage Losses: Caused by air resistance and turbulence as the motor rotates.
- Iron Losses: Losses in the motor’s magnetic core, including hysteresis and eddy current losses.
- Ohmic Losses: Caused by current flowing through the resistance of the motor’s conductors.
