Planning a summer road trip in your classic? Here are 4 things to check before you hit the highway:

1. Cooling system - flush the radiator and check all hoses for cracks or soft spots. Overheating on a back road is no fun.

2. Belts - inspect for glazing, cracking, or fraying. A broken belt can leave you stranded fast.

3. Tires - check tread depth, sidewall condition, and tire age. Even tires with good tread can dry rot if they're old.

4. Weatherstripping - nothing ruins a cruise like wind noise or a leak. Replace worn door and window seals before your trip.

5 things to check on your classic before summer driving season hits:

1. Cooling system — flush old coolant, check hoses and clamps, and make sure your thermostat is opening properly. Overheating on the side of the road is no way to start the season.

2. Brakes — check pads, shoes, lines, and fluid. If the pedal feels soft or pulls to one side, don't ignore it.

3. Weatherstripping — cracked or flattened seals let in water, dust, and road noise. Fresh rubber makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

4. Belts and hoses — rubber deteriorates sitting in a garage all winter. Look for cracks, swelling, or soft spots.

5. Lights and signals — walk around the car and test everything. Bulbs are cheap. Tickets and accidents aren't.
