We are excited to announce a new chapter for Charles P. Johnson & Associates! Please join us in congratulating Dr. Haitham Hijazi, P.E., P.L.S., on his appointment as President of CPJ, effective August 1, 2026.

Haitham becomes only the third President in CPJ’s more than 50-year history, succeeding Paul B. Johnson, who led the firm for the past 20 years. Paul followed in the footsteps of his father, CPJ founder Charles “Charlie” P. Johnson, carrying forward the vision, values, and commitment to excellence that has shaped our firm for more than five decades.

With almost 40 years of experience in engineering and land surveying, Haitham brings extensive leadership experience, technical expertise, and a strong commitment to our clients and communities. Prior to joining CPJ, he spent eight years with Light, Elliott & Associates, Inc., before serving in senior leadership roles with Prince George’s County Government, including the Department of Public Works and Transportation.

As we celebrate this important milestone, we extend our sincere gratitude to Paul for his decades of leadership, stewardship, and dedication to CPJ. CPJ was proud to join police staff, council members, and Mayor Linda Monroe for the groundbreaking of the Chamber Avenue Project in The Town of Capitol Heights, MD. This long-anticipated initiative marks a major step forward in community beautification and sustainable infrastructure.

As Town Engineer, CPJ is helping guide improvements including widened, ADA-compliant sidewalks, enhanced drainage solutions, and the installation of a bioretention facility that will naturally filter roadway runoff before it reaches the Chesapeake Bay. We’re excited to see this space transform into a self-sustaining, environmentally conscious asset for the community.

We’re back from the Maryland Municipal League 2026 Summer Conference!

Our team had a great time reconnecting with many of the municipalities we’re proud to partner with and establishing new relationships with others across the state. With key officials representing over 160 local governments, the conference was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore innovative engineering solutions that strengthen infrastructure and enhance quality of life throughout Maryland.

From resilient stormwater management to sustainable site design and community-focused planning, we’re excited to keep the momentum going and continue supporting Maryland’s communities through thoughtful, forward-thinking engineering.

We are pleased to share that this May, Brice Forest, a member of our Engineering Department, was recognized at the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers (MDSPE) Newly Licensed Engineers Event.

The event brought together Maryland’s engineering community to recognize newly licensed professionals and celebrate this important career milestone. We were especially proud to be there in support of Brice as they reached this achievement.

A highlight of the evening was the Order of the Engineer ceremony, where Brice received their steel ring, symbolizing their pledge to uphold the integrity, ethics, and responsibility that come with being an engineer. It was a meaningful moment to witness and celebrate together.

Congratulations to Brice on earning their Professional Engineer (PE) license, a testament to their dedication, expertise, and commitment to the engineering profession. We are proud to celebrate this milestone and look forward to all they will accomplish in their career.

Last week, our team attended the Chesapeake Water Environment Association (CWEA) Stormwater Seminar to stay up to date on the latest developments in stormwater management and connect with the many clients, partners, and industry peers we regularly work with across the region.

As an organization dedicated to improving water quality and protecting the water environment across Delaware, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., the Chesapeake WEA plays an important role in advancing education, collaboration, and technical expertise within our industry.

In addition to networking, we attended several informative technical sessions, including “From Hotspot to Watershed,” which highlighted evolving approaches to watershed-scale planning and management. Experiences like this help us bring informed, forward-thinking solutions back to our projects.

As we celebrate Construction Safety Week, today we are taking part in OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls. Falls remain one of the leading causes of worker fatalities and life-altering injuries in our industry.

The most concerning part is that nearly all fall-related incidents are preventable with the right preparation, equipment, communication, and awareness. Fall protection only works when it’s used correctly, every single time. No shortcuts. No exceptions.

Speaking up, slowing down, and choosing the safer action every time is what prevents falls, protects one another, and ensures everyone makes it home safely at the end of the day.
