Congratulations to this year's JBU Eaglenaut Robotics team for their amazing progress in getting "Murphy" running! Redesigned chassis, bucket, and wheels, new codebase, 2D LIDAR obstacle detection, and more! Unfortunately the in-person competition was canceled due to COVID. But these students did a great job this year. They were even recently featured on a Spanish-language television program: https://latinotvar.com/john-brown-tech-y-nasa/

Yesterday the JBU robot completed its second competition run. Earlier in the day the main servo actuator had suddenly burned out, but the team was able to improvise an alternative motor solution to raise the dumping bucket.

In the competition run, the robot was able to mine the gravel successfully and bring it back to the bin, but was not able to lift up the gravel to deposit it into the bin. It turned out that the substitute motor coupler was not strong enough to transfer the torque.

As this week's (and year's) competition and project concludes, we are thankful to God for the progress achieved and learning received, and thankful for the support from all of you.

The robot had some issues today during and after its first competition run. (Video available here, starting at time 5:03:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VahaU7XIT58 ) Both drive chains broke, two axle bearings broke, the 30 amp auger motor fuse blew, and both the main Raspberry Pi and one of the Sabertooth motor drivers burned out. On the positive side, the judges said they liked the way the robot was able to maneuver. The digging mechanism was also able to mine some of the gravel.

The team has been hard at work repairing these various problems. We hope to compete again tomorrow (Thursday), at some time. Our scheduled time is 4:45pm, but they will try to compress the schedule due to a lot of rain that is coming (the robots need to be transported about 1/4 mile outside from the workshop to the competition arena). We may go in the morning. Thanks everyone for your support and prayers!

2019 Robotics Mining Challenge Day 1 Time Stamps:

The JBU Eaglenauts team has been doing great work getting the NASA-RMC (Marsbot) robot ready for its competition runs. We had two practice runs today, and "Richard the robot" was able to mine gravel and bring it back to the collection bin, but had trouble dumping it into the bin. Hopefully the modifications the team made will allow it to succeed tomorrow.

Our competition times are currently posted as 3:05pm Wednesday and 4:45pm Thursday, but those may change. The livestreams may be watched from the appropriate link from this page: https://www.youtube.com/user/AlabamaLunabot
