Well it’s been a few months, the snow is blowing and the temperature is staying below freezing, and there has been lots of ups and downs, lessons learned, fun times, and lots of hard work. The biggest “down” is that is the grain elevator in Ashton, Idaho came “down” on September 1, 2022. (See video). Lots of great wood and panels, tons of 2x4s, and lots of big beams that have been reclaimed from the 4 month project. It was quite the project and I couldn’t have done it without the help of Dennis Meagher (financier) and Gustavo Forero (who was on a Visa from Columbia, and did a lot of great work, and became a new lifetime friend. Can’t wait until I get to visit him in Bogota). My wife and family for having me gone most of the time. And a special shout out to Abbey, the local State Parks Ranger who was always willing to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic control, as the elevator was on State Parks land along the Ashton-Tetonia trail of the Idaho Rails-to-Trails. A huge thanks to our neighbors, the Scafe family for their help in many ways, and of course for helping me get in touch with owner of the grain elevator, Hal Harrigfeld.
The weather turned cold and we didn’t get all the wood collected yet or the place cleaned up, so plenty still to work on this spring, along with other barns to be reclaimed. What we did accomplish was to reclaim 80 beams, 3’ to 20’ long including huge 12”x12”s, 10”x12”s, 8”x10”s, 8”x8”, 6”x8”s, etc., (all for sale). We also reclaimed over 6,000 board ft of 2”x6”, 2”x8”, and 2”x12” and over 6,000 square feet of shiplap (all boards and shiplap sold to date). Oh, and lots of metal panel sheets, (all longer sheets are sold) but have 100s of small sheets that are 25”x30”.
The majority of what we reclaimed from the elevator was the cribbed 2”x4”s that made up most of the 120 year old grain elevator. So the next phase is to de-nail approximately 8,000 2x4s that average 10’ in length, and rip them in half and plane and shape the boards to make 16,000 rough cut 3/4”x4” flooring from the beautiful weathered wood. That’s over 50,000 sq. ft. of beautiful flooring. The inside cut is beautiful too, with a smooth cut but with the nail markings showing, (see pictures of each). So either side is gorgeous old reclaimed wood that will make great flooring or planks for walls, or whatever your project is. We are taking orders now, delivery to be this spring.
As you can see, everything sells pretty fast, so don’t wait until the last minute, it may be gone, as well as your chance to own a part of history. This is definitely not the same as any wood you buy today at a lumber store. Remember this wood was milled and used to build a grain elevator in Ashton, Idaho in 1901-1902, over 120 years ago.
