At this time of year many backrooms and storage areas are holding a lot of extra stock for the holidays. Be sure that you are complying with stock heights and keeping walkways and aisle clear for fire and employee safety concerns. This can prevent a potential serious problem in case of an emergency. Many high piled storage can constitute stock heights of only 6+ feet for some products. International Fire Code Chapter 32 provides guidance on commodity classifications and permit requirements relating to storage methods, fire suppression, and even access into the storage areas. As fire protection engineers, our primary goal is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public and property from the impacts of fire. One critical area of focus in achieving this is Egress and Life Safety Design Concepts.

By understanding human behavior, physiological responses, and fire effects, we can design buildings with adequate exits, stairways, and other egress systems that enable occupants to evacuate quickly and safely.
