The UW Resilience Lab is putting on the following event:

Fail Forward: Reflections on Rejection

10/27/15
Doors open for evening snacks at 6:00 p.m.
Event starts at 6:30 p.m.
Kane Hall, room 130

Hear about the greatest victories and toughest defeats of outstanding UW coaches Heather Tarr (softball), Lorenzo Romar (men’s basketball) and Lesle Gallimore (women’s soccer) in this evening of Reflections on Rejection, presented by the UW Resilience Lab. What can adversity, struggle and defeat teach us about success, meaning, identity and, ultimately, how to fail forward? We’ll explore just that in this panel discussion moderated by Undergraduate Academic Affairs’ Dean Ed Taylor and Dr. Anne Browning.

Researchers at UW are conducting some interesting research into the power of images:

Google search results aren't the problem, Matuszek said. But changes in someone's behavior after exposure to certain images, she said, may highlight an unconscious bias employers should seek to understand and address.

“The takeaway isn’t that we should change the way search works," she said. "This kind of thing could tie into whether someone gets hired for something. You could see a female engineer in a job interview and think she looks less competent. You should question why.”

Researchers are looking at how Google image search results shape our perceptions of women.

Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, this year we have adapted the PEERs (Promoting Equity in Engineering Relationships) class (ENGR 401A: Leadership Development to Promote Equity in Engineering Relationships) into a three-credit class which qualifies for diversity requirement credits as well as I&N credits. We have a record 30 engineering and pre-engineering students enrolled in the class this spring quarter. It has been an amazing experience and we look forward to seeing what they have to say at their final class presentations.

We invite you to join us on Friday, June 12th from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. in HUB #214 to hear the final student presentations. If you have attended before, this year’s presentations will be slightly different. Student presentations will take a variety of forms and will be done individually or in pairs. As before, students will share their ideas about how to increase diversity in engineering and make the College of Engineering increasingly inclusive and welcoming. Come be a part of the PEERs experience! Find out how engineering is working to be more supportive of our students and how you, too, can help make engineering a more inclusive and welcoming environment.

If you are able to attend the June 12th presentations, please RSVP to Florence Sum, ADVANCE Graduate Staff Assistant, at [email protected]

Again, here are the details:

What: PEERs class final student presentations

Where: HUB #214

When: Friday, June 12

Time: 2:30 – 4:20 p.m.

RSVP: [email protected]

We hope to see you there! Feel free to pass this invitation along to others you think might be interested in attending.

What does it mean to "Fail Forward?". Find out May 6th and 7th at the UW Seattle campus. :)

"In collaboration with Stanford University’s Resilience Project, the UW is offering two days of programming on the possibilities for learning in the midst of rejection, failure, and disappointment. Student sessions will focus on developing as an individual and a leader. Staff sessions will help practitioners develop skills at framing challenge and adversity as invaluable aspects of intellectual and emotional growth."

Words of wisdom from Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”

In her excellent TED talk, "The danger of a single story," Adichie discusses how "Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories... and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding." To watch her talk, visit http://bit.ly/U5t0Hy

Adichie is the author of several acclaimed novels including "Purple Hibiscus" (http://amzn.to/1q9TXCd), "Half of a Yellow Sun" (http://amzn.to/1uEGVSx), and "Americanah" (http://amzn.to/1qHkCN9).

At A Mighty Girl, we're committed to showcasing a diverse range of Mighty Girl characters and stories in our book collection. In our "Multicultural Fiction" section, you can use the filter on the left menu, to sort our collection by numerous characteristics, including ethnicity such as African or Native American or location such as Europe or Latin America. An interesting conversation discussing what happened to women in computer science.

A lot of computing pioneers, the ones who programmed the first digital computers, were women. For decades, the number of women in computer science was growing. But in 1984, something changed.
