Shanghai’s new Grand Opera House has officially opened.

Designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with ECADI, the waterfront building opened on October 17, 2026. A sweeping spiral staircase connects the ground to a vast rooftop overlooking the Huangpu River.

Inside, three auditoriums provide a total of 4,200 seats, alongside spaces for rehearsals, exhibitions and arts education.

This waiting room was designed in 1940 — and the bench literally grows out of the wall.

Located at Trons Kapell in Stockholm’s Skogskyrkogården, the space was designed by Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund as part of his final major work.

The curved wooden seating flows directly from the wall paneling, creating an unusually soft and intimate waiting space within the otherwise restrained modernist interior.
