The 𝐇𝐨𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 is accelerating the development of affordable, easy-to-install split-system heat pump water heaters for space-constrained buildings.

Led by Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) with support from a national coalition, the Prize focuses on real-world feasibility—advancing turnkey systems with compact indoor storage and quiet outdoor compressors.

These solutions expand where high-efficiency, all-electric water heating can be applied—especially in buildings where traditional HPWH systems don’t fit.

As a co-sponsor, we’re excited to support this work and help bring practical, cost-effective solutions to more projects and communities.

Jon will also discuss how utility programs can help accelerate adoption and improve outcomes by supporting consistent, high-quality system design.

𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱: 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗡𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻!

Due to an extreme winter design temperature of -12°F, CAST architecture and Ecotope encouraged the owner to follow Passive House design methodology to super-insulate the building in order to improve occupant comfort and dramatically downsize the all-electric heat pump space conditioning system. A CO2 refrigerant-based heat pump water heater system was installed to ensure that the retail, office, and apartment units are provided with domestic hot water all year-round in this cold climate. High-efficiency ventilators (Ventacity), enhanced air filtration, solar PV panels, a backup genset, and a wildfire inundation system are also provided for enhanced resiliency and long-term performance of the building.

2026 marks 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗲’𝘀 𝟱𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆—a milestone that reflects five decades of research, engineering, policy and design leadership in energy efficiency and decarbonization. From efficient building technologies like heat recovery ventilation, thermal storage, and heat pump water heaters to shaping building codes and designing high-performance buildings across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, we’re proud of the impact we’ve made—and even more excited for what’s ahead.
