🔋 When it comes to Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), public support comes down to one thing: safety.

After several battery fires, residents in Orange County, New York are asking for more than promises. Research from Firetrace International shows that while most still believe energy storage is essential for the clean energy transition, 92% of residents say they’re more likely to support BESS projects if advanced fire suppression is included.

“Fine dust particles, filter material, and ignition sources like friction, sparks, or hot material can combine quickly to create a fire that spreads throughout the machine and building.

That’s why automatic fire suppression is essential. The three most common fire suppression approaches used in dust collector applications today are:

- Dry chemical
- Water mist
- Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)

Each has advantages and limitations. Below is a breakdown of each solution to help you understand how these systems work and which one is best for you…”

"Dust collectors are a necessity when it comes to day-to-day operations in many industrial applications to keep facilities clean and workers safe.

While necessary, dust collectors also pose a risk of fire. It is important to understand why these fires start and how to mitigate the risk in order to maintain the safety and business continuity of your shop"

Firetrace International, a global leader in fire suppression solutions, today announced it has achieved ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) certifications, reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility, employee safety, and operational excellence.

The certifications were awarded following comprehensive, independent audits conducted by Systems Certification Body (SCB), an IAMPO Company. The audits verified that Firetrace’s management systems meet internationally recognized standards for environmental stewardship and workplace health and safety.

ISO 14001 certification confirms that Firetrace has implemented a structured, continuously improving framework to identify, manage, and reduce its environmental impact, while ensuring regulatory compliance. ISO 45001 certification demonstrates that Firetrace proactively identifies workplace hazards, mitigates risk, and embeds employee health and safety into daily operations and decision-making.

“These certifications represent much more than a milestone; they reflect how Firetrace operates every day,” said Tom Crane, President of Firetrace International. “Protecting people, property, and the environment is at the core of our mission. Do isolated turbine fires threaten Europe’s onshore wind boom? And is media reporting fuelling community opposition to projects?

These were some of the questions explored in our latest virtual roundtable, hosted in partnership with Tamarindo, where industry leaders discussed how developers and OEMs can address fire safety concerns, tackle misinformation and win local support for onshore wind projects. Key takeaways include:

💡Turbine fires are rare, but media coverage can sensationalize incidents and heighten local community opposition.
💡Early, proactive and transparent engagement with communities is crucial for securing project support.
💡Standardized data on turbine fire events is essential to tackling myths and misinformation.
💡Advanced fire detection and suppression technologies play a critical role in boosting both safety and public confidence.

A big thank you to our expert panel - Jason Welch, John Morris, Chris Streatfeild, Joe DeBellis and Stephen Rogers - for a truly insightful discussion. Watch the full roundtable here:

Fire safety could be the key to unlocking BESS growth in LA County. 🔋

We found that 82% of residents would be more supportive of local battery storage projects if stronger fire safety measures were in place.

In his latest blog, Joe DeBellis, our Global Head of Clean Energy, dives into what this means for developers, OEMs, and utilities working to scale storage responsibly.

He explains why fire risk assessments, suppression systems, and community engagement aren’t just best practices. They are critical to maintaining public trust and accelerating deployment.

🎯 New York State continues to lead the U.S. energy storage movement, breaking ground on 7.5 MW of new capacity and approved five additional projects totaling 42.5 MW, proving that progress continues despite challenges and community opposition.

In response to recent BESS fire concerns, New York has introduced comprehensive fire safety codes that set a national benchmark for public safety and asset protection.

This is a step in the right direction but as our Global Head of Clean Energy, Joe DeBellis, discusses, more needs to be done to continue building trust and protecting what matters most. To learn more, read the full article here: https://bit.ly/47MprOA

Even in regions leading the way on clean energy, public support can’t be taken for granted.

Joe DeBellis, our Global Head of Clean Energy, highlights our latest research in Kern County, California - home to some of the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the U.S. It reveals that health and safety concerns remain the #1 barrier to public acceptance.

Key findings:

🔎 32% of residents cite health and safety risks as their biggest concern.
🔎 62% say they’d be more supportive if advanced fire suppression and emergency response plans were in place.
🔎 Only 40% of locals currently support BESS projects in their community.

The takeaway is clear: the energy storage sector must do more to address fire safety, emergency preparedness, and community trust to secure long-term success.

🚦If we want more green lights for clean energy, we need fewer question marks about safety.

While media often portrays the fear around battery energy storage systems (BESS), our survey shows many communities, like Kern County, are supportive. Opposition stems mostly from lack of understanding. As our Global Head of Clean Energy, Joe DeBellis, shared with The Bakersfield Californian: trust comes from addressing concerns directly and proving safety is built in from the start.

At Firetrace, we believe being proactive in fire protection is one of the strongest ways to build that trust. By leaving nothing up to chance, we give communities the confidence that clean energy projects are both safe and reliable.
