The 2010’s were a decade of global expansion for GMC, as we serviced many of our customers outside of the US. As our customers expanded their manufacturing footprint around the globe, Gleicher was called upon to deliver goods to all corners of the world. 🌎

By building on our converting capabilities, we found ourselves converting materials that had been foreign to us in the past. Our supplier base increased with our additional converting capabilities, as we refined our wide web laminating and island placement of adhesives.

We also doubled the number of converting lasers with our 3rd flatbed laser, and our first galvo laser. The additional laser capacity allowed GMC to move from “prototype” and 1,000 pieces per order, to orders for 100,000’s and even millions of pieces. The lasers can cut many materials, including plastics, foams, and adhesives, making them ideal during prototyping. Allowing customers to evaluate multiple materials and different geometries before moving forward with production dies.

The decade was filled with a lot of market diversity, as Gleicher found itself partnering with customers in consumer electronics, DIY, women’s health care, military, transportation, and some emerging markets, cashless highway tolls, data centers, flash memory, and air defense systems.

💎 It’s our diamond anniversary! Here’s an out-of-this-world milestone. 🎉

Coming off our 50th anniversary year at the close of the last millennium, we continued to expand converting capabilities by installing our first laser. It revolutionized our fastening and adhesive solutions. Since then, three more lasers have been added to the production floor.

One of our most notable accomplishments of the 2000s occurred in 2003. It was the contribution we made to NASA mission SM3B, which was undertaken to correct operational issues with the oscillating solar arrays on the Hubble telescope.

Gleicher-converted parts were used in the repairs conducted by NASA astronauts 👨‍🚀👩‍🚀 to eliminate excessive flexing of solar panels in space. Once completed, the Fine Guidance Sensors of the Hubble telescope could effectively lock on to their targets during celestial observations.

Great bonding and converting solutions! We’re 75 years proud! 🎉

Technology was front and center in the 1990s as advancements in automation and CAM bolstered Gleicher production capabilities while rising client demands were met with the additions of vibration-damping solutions, increased rotary capacity, and expanded services.

We also took our high standards for quality to the next level with the awarding of an ISO 9002:1994 which specifically focused on quality assurance in production, installation, and servicing. Adherence to the rigors of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) included our development of a Quality Management System (QMS), updating quality manuals, procedures, and work instructions to comply with ISO 9002:1994 and training employees at all levels on the QMS procedures and their roles within it.

Since 1949, quality has been front and center in our converting solutions and our ISO 9002:1994 designation was one more expression of that commitment.

🎉✨ It’s 75 candles on the Gleicher birthday cake! 🎂

Looking back to the 1980s, we were well into our fourth decade of converting bonding and fastening solutions. At the same time, the personal computing industry was taking off in a big way.

No computer company was more high profile than Apple, who came calling for an ergonomic solution for their keyboards in the form of little “feet” positioned at each corner. These feet were made of urethane due to their durability, flexibility, and resistance to wear and tear. For computer users, they offered damping from the constant pounding of the keyboard, while keeping the keyboard from sliding around on a desktop.

Devising a solution was well within the realm of our experience and capabilities. From 0.25” thick rolls of urethane, the material was scored and then cross-cut to create narrow strips out of the thick material. By using this 2-step process Gleicher was able to fully utilize the rolls of material and achieve 100% yield of the input rolls.
Given the amazing success of Apple, we lost count of how many little feet we produced keeping up with consumer demand for their products.

🎉 Gleicher is proudly celebrating 75 years of converting leadership in 2024.

Half a century ago, in 1972, we moved to our current location in Scotch Plains, NJ. These new facilities enabled us to expand our capabilities to include label printing and converting with the acquisition of our first of several rotary presses. Flexographic presses, often called flexo, used flexible rubber or photopolymer plates mounted on cylinders, which transferred ink onto the label substrate. Flexo was particularly popular because of its ability to print on a variety of substrates, including plastics (like polyethylene or polypropylene), and foils.

Once the printing was completed, the converting proceeded as the labels were wound onto rolls for cutting, slitting, and any other finishing operations according to customer requirements

After several years of two-color printing, the company decided to go in a different direction and Chick Gleicher used his engineering background to modify the machines to die cut material to customer specifications.
