Thomas & Hutton

Thomas & Hutton Driven for Solutions. Powered by Passion.

Our story began in 1946 with the collaboration of former US Army Corps of Engineers, Hue Thomas and Joe Hutton, opening an engineering firm in Savannah, GA. Our founders envisioned tremendous opportunities in transforming the landscape and well-being of our communities by providing professional and consulting services to municipalities in the region, as well as private entities seeking to develop

in the area. Today, Thomas & Hutton stands as one of the most well-respected and established multidisciplinary firms in the Southeast, branching out to 15 offices across 10 regions in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Last Friday, Thomas & Hutton (T&H) interns from Savannah and Statesboro toured the Bryan County Megasite in Bryan County, Georgia, one of the largest economic development projects in the Southeast.

The visit offered a firsthand look at the planning, infrastructure, and multidisciplinary coordination behind a project of this scale. From site development and utilities to transportation and environmental coordination, interns saw how engineering, design, and teamwork support transformational growth across our communities.

At T&H, experiences like this are an important part of our internship program. By connecting classroom knowledge with real-world application, we help prepare the next generation of professionals to make a meaningful impact on the communities and industries we serve.

Sam McCachern, Jason Chambless, and Jimmy Collins recently presented to the Rotary Club of Savannah, sharing Thomas & Hutton’s 80-year story of leadership, service, and community impact across Savannah and the Southeast.

Rotarian leaders Hue Thomas and Joe Hutton (members of the Rotary Club of Savannah) shaped our firm from the very beginning. Their commitment to relationships, civic involvement, and service helped lay the foundation for the firm we are today - a multidisciplinary, employee-owned company serving communities across six states.

The presentation highlighted T&H’s growth over the past eight decades, while also recognizing the firm’s long-standing connection to Rotary and the many past and present team members who have served in Rotary leadership roles. From our earliest days to today, Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self closely aligns with the way T&H shows up for our clients, our communities, and one another.

Sam, Jason, and Jimmy also shared many of the projects, partnerships, and community initiatives that continue shaping the Savannah region today, along with T&H’s ongoing commitment to giving back through volunteerism and community engagement.

As we celebrate 80 years, we are proud to honor the Rotarian spirit that helped shape our firm from the start and continues to inspire how we build relationships and solutions for success.

Stephen Wilkinson, PLA, recently attended the University of Georgia's College of Environment and Design (CED’s) Critique Week, where he reviewed student work from the Community Design Build course led by Professor Cameron Berglund.

This year’s project focused on designing and constructing seating elements in collaboration with Brightpaths, a local nonprofit organization in Athens dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect by fostering safe and stable families through education, connection, and support. The completed seating installations will become part of a new children’s play space on the Brightpaths campus.

Stephen is also serving as a thesis committee member for UGA master’s student Bolu Alabi, whose research explores the impacts of computer-aided design and artificial intelligence on landscape architecture. The thesis examines how these technologies influence innovation, creativity, professional readiness, and the future direction of the discipline. Stephen is contributing perspective as a practitioner as the profession continues to navigate the integration of these tools into everyday work.

We’re excited to continue building on T&H’s relationship with UGA through opportunities that encourage collaboration, mentorship, and innovation in the field of landscape architecture!

This Public Works Week, Thomas & Hutton (T&H) is recognizing the people behind the projects that keep our communities growing.

For “Whatcha Wearing?” Wednesday, we’re highlighting the professionals who safely and skillfully support public infrastructure every day. From hard hats and safety vests in the field to the teams coordinating every detail behind the scenes, each role plays an important part in bringing critical infrastructure to life.

The Dorchester County Water Authority’s 1-million-gallon elevated composite water storage tank in Summers Corner, SC, is nearing completion. Projects like this represent more than concrete and steel. They reflect collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to serving the communities we call home.
