Last week I had the honor and privilege to be at insight speaker at Texas A&M with Professor Autumn leverage who is an embedded beaver professor at the University. Thank you for the opportunity and the kind words, it was a pleasure to meet the department heads and talk about the future of construction. GigEm!!
President and CEO of Lowers Welding, Dawn Davis, visited Texas A&M University’s senior-level civil engineering undergraduate course in Engineering Planning & Estimating to offer key and critical Industry Insights for the students this semester. Dawn was selected as a key speaker not only for her demonstrated performance as an accomplished executive with nearly three decades of experience in both the construction and equipment rental industries, but perhaps more importantly for her dynamic and tenacious leadership style. Recent original research which will appear in Nature Human Behavior was quoted “Our research challenges the long-held assumption that intelligence is the primary driver of academic achievement,” according to Dr Malanchini, from Queen Mary University of London. “We’ve found compelling evidence that non-cognitive skills – such as grit, perseverance, academic interest, and value attributed to learning – are not only significant predictors of success but that their influence grows stronger over time.” Showing students different pathways to success is important for their growth and professional development. The Engineering Planning & Estimating course is one of the best courses a student can take at Texas A&M because the focus is on critical and creative thinking. The course encourages the student beyond foundational levels of knowledge and comprehension, to challenge and develop their skills in higher levels of application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. These are core competencies that the heavy civil engineering and construction industries demand of their leaders.
Lowers Welding is a Beavers Association member company. “The Beavers” devotes a charitable trust for the exclusive purpose of assisting students entering the heavy civil construction industry. Texas A&M is an endowed recipient of both a student scholarship and the Urban Professor Chair. Associate Professor of Practice, Autumn Leveridge, LTC, US Army (Retired), is one of twenty “Beavers Professors” from across the United States and instructs the Engineering Planning & Estimating course for the Zachry Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
