Our team is led by Robert Satchell, PE who has designed hundreds of LSS systems throughout the world, including Chimelong's Ocean Kingdom, the world's largest marine park. Project Spotlight: Louisville Zoo Hellbenders! Louisville zoo is committed to conversation and repopulation of struggling species. One of the species they are showing this commitment too is the the Hellbenders, a species of giant salamanders that is currently housed at the zoo. To help with these efforts, Satchell Engineering & Associates worked with their team to design the Life Support System (LSS) for an 8-tank breeding system in the back of house facilities at the zoo. This aquaculture system was created to the needs of the husbandry team and fit within the space constraints of the facility.

We designed these systems to simulate gentle river ecosystems to ensure egg-laying behaviors of the Hellbenders and utilized UV sterilization and precise temperature control within the LSS. We look forward to continuing our work with the Louisville Zoo in the future!

Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Garden’s has recently opened their Manatee River Habitat! This 330,000-gallon freshwater exhibit features three main underwater viewing pools for guest enjoyment and four back of house pools used for rescue and rehabilitation. SE&A designed the aquatic Life Support Systems for this exhibit, featuring an Ozone Disinfection system as well as a Coarse and Fine water filtration system.

Welcome to our new series, Project Spotlights! This week, we feature SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, one of the largest marine parks in the world and is home to over 100,000 different species of aquatic animals. Throughout this park, you are taken on a tour of 8 environmentally themed realms full of exhibits that feature the aquatic wildlife native to those regions. Satchell Engineering & Associates is proud to be the lead Life Support System engineers for this project, designing over 65 filtration system that ensure healthy water and clear views for every exhibit at the Marine Park. These Life Support System use a variety of techniques to create exceptional water quality, some being sand filtration, deaeration, protein skimming, and UV sterilization.

The San Diego Zoo, Safari Park opened their newly upgraded Elephant Valley exhibit in March of 2026. We are honored to be a part of this project, designing the aquatic Life Support Systems for the 8 elephants housed in the exhibit. The new exhibit features a 175,000-gallon freshwater West pool as well as a 75,000-gallon East Pool especially designed for the comfort and enjoyment of the elephants.
