Sherwood Design Engineers

Sherwood Design Engineers At Sherwood, we value great planning and solid engineering. Green building is an integral part of the philosophy we bring to all our projects.

Sherwood Design Engineers is a group of civil and environmental engineers, and plannersin San Francisco, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz and Sonoma County. What sets us apart in the international design community is our dedication to developing measurable environmentally responsible infrastructure and unique sustainable engineering innovation. Our firm has demonstrated leadership in sus

tainable infrastructure through project innovation, international publication, and academic contributions. We have many LEED-accredited green-building professionals on staff and in-house ecology on our design team, and we bring a history of sound, technical engineering to every assignment. Across the globe, we have implemented new technologies and green-design innovations on projects ranging from the engineering of individual buildings to the master planning of large-scale developments and sustainable communities. As engineers, we believe that true sustainability requires considering all aspects of a project’s design, development, and impact; and clients continually seek us out for our integrated approach to large-scale, environmentally sensitive projects. Our planning begins with specific site research to assess environmental constraints and opportunities, and our process encourages the active participation of all parties involved, including clients, other designers, public agencies, and the local community. Sherwood has been responsible for master planning and infrastructure designs for high-profile projects from the building scale to the city scale. Our team engineered resilient infrastructure for the Hudson Yards high-density urban development in New York. We applied our expertise in innovative stormwater management to the urban redevelopment of Mint Plaza that precipitated new standards for management of stormwater in San Francisco. Abroad, we worked on the 36-square-kilometer transformation of one of China’s largest brownfield conversions in the heart of the Pearl River Delta in Guangzhou. Each of our designs incorporates the best combination of technology and sustainability available. Everywhere we work, we provide creative engineering designs that make positive contributions to the local economy and environment. Whether it is installing California’s first residential rainwater harvester for indoor use, redesigning public parks and plazas to improve pedestrian and bicycle access, incorporating artistic elements into municipal infrastructure, or making cleaner, greener streets and schools, Sherwood is dedicated to integrating truly sustainable engineering into private buildings, urban ecosystems, and worldwide communities.

Closing out Women’s month, Sherwood's Costa Rica office had a open forum on the challenges women encounter in the workspace. This exercise allowed staff to provide insight and have a thoughtful discussion that acknowledged these issues and identified ways to address them.

Last week, our Petaluma team toured wastewater facilities at Sleeping Giant Fruit Winery and Hudson Ranch and Winery. Sleeping Giant Fruit Winery uses a BioFiltro System where worm beds are used to treat winery wastewater. Hudson Ranch & Vineyards uses a Specialty Treatment Solutions (STS) System for winery wastewater that includes a membrane bio reactor (MBR). Both wineries provide valuable precedent and insight to onsite treatment of wastewater that is reused for vineyard or landscape irrigation.

SheSrwood’s San Francisco office signed up with SF Water, Power, Sewer (SFPUC) to (actually, four!) in our local Mission District. The new volunteer-led program allows residents to monitor their local drainage inlets and clear debris prior to rain events. By adopting four drains, aptly named Sher Would, Sher Could, Sher Should, and Sher Does Drain – our staff are local !

Below is link to adopt a local drain in your community too!
