An Affordable Housing Milestone!
Everyone once in a while, we like to take stock of what we’ve accomplished. We look up from our civil engineering and joint trench plans and appreciate our ability to work on so many personally meaningful projects. In the last couple of years, we’ve been able to help developers, designers and contractors bring over 9000 units of affordable and supportive housing to the Bay Area. Housing for families, teens, seniors, veterans, teachers, people with disabilities, formerly homeless individuals, and more. Applying our expertise and experience to the benefit of EVERYONE in our community is what drives us. Let’s keep it up, Bay Area. Now, we’ll get back to work.

Our Joint Trench/ Dry Utilities Team looks beneath the surface of a project. Using our civil engineering experience, we see things other designers don't, enabling us to create the right fit for our urban projects. Featured is 555 Larkin nearing completion in San Francisco. This new affordable housing complex was designed by and includes retail and residential amenity spaces as well as a large ground-floor courtyard and rooftop urban farm.

We recently attended the grand re-opening of Westlake Christian Terrace West. Originally built in 1976, the 200 apartment highrise in downtown Oakland was rehabilitated and updated to provide more modern, relevant, accessible and energy-efficient senior living. UDCE served as civil engineer for the MWA Architect-led renovation. We paid particular attention to the open outdoor plaza, exercise area, covered rideshare stop, translucent covered walkways, and accessible paths of travel. Congratulations to the team and Christian Church Homes!

Construction is almost complete on our Quetzal Gardens project. This Resources for Community Development project provides 71-units of affordable housing in the Little Portugal area of East San Jose. SGPA used the Quetzal bird as a guide for the building's design. UDCE's utility company-focused process helped propel joint trench design and coordination for this project forward and ensure the right fit.

From parking lots to affordable housing near the Embarcadero - the new Broadway Cove provides family housing while neighboring 735 Davis provides senior housing - 178 units total. The LMSa-designed development features ground-floor commercial space geared towards neighborhood uses, including a childcare center operated by the YMCA of San Francisco as well as a landscaped public passageway between the buildings. UDCE provided joint trench design and coordination services for this awesome Bridge Housing and John Stewart Company project.

Locally-built, affordable, supportive housing - music to our ears. We’re enjoying working with David Baker Architects and Eden Housing to help energize 75 units of permanent, affordable housing for Vallejo’s homeless, veteran and low-income residents. 2118 Sacramento Street's modular units will be built by Factory_OS on nearby Mare Island. UDCE has got the hook up - joint trench and dry utilities design and coordination - for affordable housing developments throughout the Bay Area - now over 50 and counting.

Mission-centric housing comes to life. Construction of the 100% affordable housing development, Casa Adelante, at the busy intersection of Folsom and 16th Street is nearing completion. We're excited about having helped energize this joint Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation / Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) project with joint trench/ dry utility design and coordination. The Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects-designed project features awesome ground floor amenities including Galeria de la Raza gallery space, program space for H.O.M.E.Y., a nonprofit that empowers local youth and young adults, as well as childcare. Rooftop garden, photovoltaics and solar hot water arrays add to the development's LEED Gold target.

We're no strangers to San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood. In fact, UDCE’s Principal Jason Ling has been providing joint trench/ dry utility design and coordination services for the Mission Bay Area since 1999. So we are delighted to see construction finishing up on another project, Mission Bay Block 6 West. This new 152-unit Mercy Housing affordable housing development is made up of four wings surrounding a multi-use courtyard. Designed by Paulett Taggart Architects in collaboration with Studio VARA , the community-oriented complex is supported by indoor and outdoor community gathering spaces, service-providing tenant spaces and onsite parking.

We're busy helping lay the groundwork for over 10,000 units of housing in the Bay Area - from Sacramento to San Jose. One might call us experts.

Named after the first black woman elected to US Congress, the Shirley Chisholm Village will bring 135 units of affordable educator housing to the Sunset District of San Francisco. The MidPen Housing project’s extensive community engagement process ensured shared outdoor and indoor spaces for neighboring community use as well as underground parking to reduce street congestion. This all-electric project designed by BAR Architects takes advantage of solar panels and high efficiency heat pump technology to lower utility costs and carbon emissions. UDCE’s work encompasses dry utilities/ joint trench coordination and composite design of electrical, telephone and cable television vaults and systems in the streets and sidewalk. Helping bring much-needed, affordable educator housing to San Francisco - a worthy cause indeed.

From motels to housing. UDCE is providing joint trench services for two motel conversion projects designed by - one in Eureka developed by Providence Supportive Housing and one in Fremont developed by Resources for Community Development. Eureka House, the rehabilitation of two existing motel buildings and the addition of a new building along 4th Street in Eureka, will provide 49 affordable units, support services, and common amenities for those experiencing homelessness. Similarly, the Bell Street Gardens project in Fremont involves the conversion of an existing motel into affordable housing alongside a new family housing development, providing 128 new units total. We’re excited about these sustainable re-uses of motels to create affordable housing in California.

In 1995, a fire destroyed the ornate Gothic St. Paulus Lutheran Church at 950 Gough. In its place now stands 's 8-story residential building featuring 95 condos, 11 of which are below-market rate, and a new 10,000 square-foot sanctuary for the St. Paulus Lutheran Church, all over a subterranean garage. Handel Architects designed an awesome green roof deck to overlook neighboring Jefferson Square Park. UDCE provided full civil engineering, stormwater and joint trench services for this project along the zooming Gough corridor. No ghosts were encountered during construction.
