Congratulations to Bade Sozer, PhD, PE, Water Market Lead – East at Delve Underground, on her selection to The Moles Class of 2026!

The Moles is a national organization of heavy construction professionals and is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious organizations in the industry. Membership is earned through a rigorous nomination process supported by letters from five existing Moles and a formal review.

"The Moles recognizes people who have shaped the heavy construction industry and Bade has been doing exactly that for more than two decades,” said Victor Romero. “Her induction is a testament to her engineering excellence and her leadership at Delve Underground.”

Bade joins fellow Delve Underground Moles Bill Edgerton, John Kaplin, Dan Adams, and Victor Romero.

As we continue to journey through our 70-year history, we remember our third company president, John W. Nichols. A graduate of the Missouri School of Mines with a BS in , John brought 13 years of heavy construction experience to the firm before joining as a partner in 1962. His early career with a major international contractor spanned the globe, from the Pontchartrain Bridge and Chesapeake Bay Crossing, to NATO air base construction in France, and port development in Liberia.

After joining the firm, John prepared detailed analysis and estimates for projects including Oroville Dam, San Luis Dam, and the San Mateo–Hayward Bridge Substructure in California; the Yellowtail Powerplant Completion in Montana; BART's Trans-Bay Tube; the Kainji Project on the Niger River in Nigeria; the Mt. Coffee Hydroelectric Development in Liberia; and the Qadirabad–Balloki Link Canal in Pakistan.

In 1970, John established the firm's department. Under his direction, the firm handled claims for owners and contractors on landmark projects including EPCOT Center, the Golden Gate Bridge renovation, the MGM Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, and O'Hare Airport. We continue to support contractor and owner clients with resolving construction disputes.

As the firm's third president (1985–1992), John built on the foundation established by Don Jacobs and Jim Wilton, holding fast to the principle that good engineering begins with a deep understanding of how things get built—a value that continues to define Delve Underground today.

As we continue celebrating 70 years of Delve Underground, we look back at our role in shaping a new generation of subway systems, beginning with the Bay Area Rapid Transit system in the 1960s.

At a time when few firms had experience with new, large scale underground transit systems, Jacobs Associates recognized the opportunity for new innovations and became involved early in BART’s development. The firm supported the program with construction cost estimating using new software, alternative conceptual designs for and stations, and introduced critical path scheduling, an emerging technique that helped bring greater efficiency and coordination to complex infrastructure projects.

As construction advanced, Jacobs Associates delivered innovative excavation support designs for major stations, including Oakland City Center and Powell Street. These solutions improved safety and constructability while also significantly reducing the cost of excavation support. The team’s deep understanding of construction methods led to a series of advancements such as prefabricated internal bracing, improved strut preloading systems, and mat decking that allowed streets to reopen more quickly.

One of the most complex challenges came at Embarcadero Station, where difficult Bay Mud conditions and groundwater pressures next to San Francisco Bay posed serious risks. In response, Jacobs Associates developed a pioneering approach using diaphragm slurry walls, which was one of the early notable applications of this technique in the United States. We also developed a method for relocating and reusing heavy structural supports as excavation progressed. This innovation allowed construction to proceed efficiently while using less than half of the originally estimated steel.

These breakthroughs helped set the standard for subway construction for decades to come. Decades later, that same commitment to practical innovation and real-world constructability continues to define Delve Underground’s work on complex underground infrastructure projects around the world.
