Join us on Thursday, 10 September, as Delve Underground’s Denis Tepavac, CPEng, RPEV, RPEQ, and Dean Treweek, MIEAust, CPEng, NER, present “Tunnelling Under New York” for the Australian Tunnelling Society’s Victoria chapter.

This hybrid event will explore how Australian design expertise is helping shape two of the largest underground infrastructure projects in one of the world’s most densely populated urban environments.

Denis and Dean will provide an overview of the two projects covering a wide range of topics, including the technical challenges and the differences between Australian and US design practice.

About the speakers:
Denis brings 17 years of tunnelling experience across transportation, water, and wastewater projects. He leads design for the station caverns on Second Avenue Subway Phase 2, a $2 billion extension of the Q line that combines TBM, cut-and-cover, and mined construction beneath one of New York’s busiest corridors.

Dean brings 18 years of experience in tunnel, shaft, and segmental lining design. He leads the tunnelling package for the Manhattan Tunnel Project, where jet grouting, ground freezing, and shield tunnelling are paving the way for the Hudson Tunnel Project.

We are proud to have supported the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's and its goal to reduce the 4.5 billion gallons of combined sewer overflows released into and its tributaries each year.

The Shoreline Storage Tunnel is nearing completion, and Delve Underground has been part of the project from design through construction. The nearly 2.7-mile tunnel will capture and store those overflows along the Lake Erie shoreline, helping improve water quality in the .

The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Far Site Excavation Project was recently named the Underground Construction Association 2026 Project of the Year in the $100M–$500M category. We are proud of the role our team played in this complex project.

Located a mile underground in the historic Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, , the excavation created three large caverns, connecting drifts and chambers, and a ventilation shaft that will house the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE)—all built in a high-stress, geologically complex rock mass. Delve Underground's involvement spans more than a decade, from early concept planning with Fermilab through preliminary design, final design, and engineering services during construction.

“The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility project combined complex geotechnical conditions, large-scale underground excavation, and major logistical demands requiring innovation and close collaboration. Delve Underground was honored to support the project from planning through construction and help deliver this extraordinary underground facility," said Mark Havekost, Principal Engineer.

The Central Interceptor is fully operational!

We are celebrating alongside Watercare Services Limited as New Zealand's largest-ever wastewater infrastructure project reaches the finish line. Delve Underground is proud to have been part of this transformational project from the start. As part of the Jacobs team, we delivered the detailed geotechnical and structural design of the 16.2-kilometer (10.1 mi) main tunnel, shafts, and the diaphragm walls for the pumping station, plus construction management and geotechnical support throughout construction.

Some of the innovations we're especially proud of:
• Cascade drops that eliminated several deaeration shafts, cutting cost and carbon footprint
• A prefabricated glass fiber reinforced plastic lining for deep, small-diameter drop shafts—avoiding manned entry and shortening the schedule
• A dual-cell diaphragm shaft that separated tunnel construction from pumping station construction, reducing the critical path and providing emergency pressure relief
• Delve Underground developed several concept designs to shield precast concrete segments from corrosive sewer gases. Ultimately the contractor selected our integrated HDPE lining system cast directly onto the segments. These were extrusion-welded after tunneling to create a continuous barrier.

The tunnel will dramatically reduce wet-weather overflows and improve the health of Auckland's waterways and harbors for generations. As we continue celebrating our 70th anniversary, this edition of Segments reflects a theme at the heart of our story: how the work of one generation becomes the foundation for the next. The principles established by our earliest teams on projects like the Tooma-Tumut Tunnel in ’s Snowy Mountains nearly 70 years ago—technical rigor, close collaboration, and practical problem-solving in difficult ground—still guide how we work today.

That legacy is on display in a milestone we’re proud to share. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site Excavation Project, located nearly a mile underground in South Dakota, received the Underground Construction Association’s 2026 Project of the Year Award in the $100M–$500M category—recognition of the technical expertise, scale, complexity, and collaboration behind a project advancing both underground construction and scientific discovery.

The Broadway Subway Project was recently named the 2026 Canadian Project of the Year (over $300 million) by the Tunnelling Association of Canada. The 5.7-kilometre extension of the SkyTrain Millennium Line is one of Canada's most significant projects, delivering a vital link beneath one of Vancouver's busiest corridors.

Delve Underground is proud to have supported Transportation Investment Corporation (TICorp) and the , as part of the Owner’s Engineer Team by developing the Reference Concept Design of the tunnel, supporting the development of the Reference Concept Design for the underground stations and by providing construction surveillance services during the implementation phase.
