QUALCOMM, SAN DIEGO - 'Q' BLDG ADDITION:
This challenging project added 237,000 SF on four floors and a basement to the existing building 'Q' to serve an additional 1,000 new employees and provide basic services to nearby buildings for a campus like environment. For this reason the project included a 328 seat Lecture Hall, an indoor Dining Area for 180 people and outdoor dining for 120, a commercial kitchen facility to serve the campus and 42,000 SF of research and development dry computer laboratories.
The project included a main distribution frame, server room and UPS room with redundant unit and system computer room units, protected by a Novec 1230 clean agent fire suppression system. Multiple rack rooms with chilled water in-row cooling units were designed on each laboratory floor. Multiple fan array rooftop air chilled water air handling units provide uninterrupted Variable Air Volume HVAC services to their high power density laboratories and offices, taking advantage of the site's outside air economizer usage potential. A new 4.6 Megawatt natural gas cogeneration plant provides self generated electric power and chilled water for the campus, with a Solar Turbines Mercury 50 natural gas turbine and a1,570 Ton absorption chiller. Plate and frame heat exchangers added to three existing electric chilled water plants allow the campus to make use of the chilled water generated using the turbine's waste heat, with new underground chilled water pipes distributing chilled water to the new and existing buildings. The project had five main phases and packages: Site Grading and Utilities, Central Plant, Parking Garage, Core and Shell, and Tenant Improvement. They were all designed by our MP team using Revit MEP to a BIM Level of Development 300 that allowed critical coordination of multiple utility layers.
