Each summer, we're lucky to be included in a long-standing racetrack tradition, Mannington Commercial's Day at the Races hosted by Peter, Ben and Judith at GC Thomas. It’s always a welcome break to trade construction sets for betting slips and floor plans for finish lines, enjoying a day in the sun and testing our luck on the ponies instead of project deadlines. We're grateful for the partnerships that make outings like this such a memorable treat.

Congratulations to Victoria Middleton, Senior Interior Designer. Victoria completed her Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC.) at the end of December adding to her NCIDQ credential.

According to the Center for Health Design, “Evidence-Based Design (EBD) is the process of basing decisions about the built environment on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes. A large and growing body of evidence attests to the fact that physical environment impacts patient stress, patient and staff safety, staff effectiveness and quality of care provided in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Basing healthcare facility planning and design decisions on this evidence to achieve the best possible patient, staff and operational outcomes is what evidence-based design is all about.”

Pacific 33 Architects prides itself on our commitment to Evidence-Based Design and is a Center for Health Design corporate-affiliated firm.

Our employee spotlight for January focuses on Anna Neubauer, our intern architect. As a member of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA), Anna is part of an international and interdisciplinary community striving to create positive change in design practice and education for the benefit of human health. Let's get to know her a little better.

1. What made you decide to go into architecture/design?
I've always had a very analytical mind, and growing up, while my brothers were off playing video games, I was hyper-focused building lego models and going off the books with my lincoln-logs. My grandpa was also a home builder and I remember always being so intrigued by his blueprints. He loved that his only granddaughter was the aspiring architect out of all his grandsons.

2. What has been your biggest inspiration for design?
I think I've always been most inspired by people. I am an avid observer, always intrigued by how individuals interact with their surroundings. In essence, my designs emerge from the synthesis of human psychology, functional considerations, and the timeless wisdom inherent in nature, creating spaces that are not just visually appealing but deeply resonate with the occupants and the surrounding environment.

3. We know you love to travel. What's been your favorite place you've ever been?
My favorite place I’ve been so far is Lucerne, Switzerland—it’s a perfect blend of natural beauty, old-world charm, and modern allure. From medieval landmarks to contemporary architecture, set against the surrealistically clear water of Lake Lucerne and the snow-peaked Swiss Alps in the distance, it's incredible.

4. Give us a flavor of what's on your Spotify wrapup?
A fusion of indie rock with the indietronica, according to Spotify.

5. What advice do you have for aspiring young designers/architects?
My advice is to embrace and follow your curiosity relentlessly. Don't shy away from the unknown; the pursuit of knowledge and the courage to explore the unexplored will not only shape your designs but also define your unique voice in the world of architecture and design.

This month in our employee spotlight, we'd like to focus on fellow designer, Alexandra (Ale) Valerio. Ale's commitment to excellence is infused with her vibrant and enthusiastic energy and makes her an invaluable asset to any team. Let's ask a few questions and get to know her a little better.

1. Where/when did you first decide you wanted to go into design?

When I was little one of my favorite TV shows was “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. I loved how a well-designed space could bring so much joy to people, then I decided that I wanted to be in a field that could make the same impact by doing something creative and functional.

2. What's the most interesting place you've ever visited?

Athens, Greece. I love how you can see a part of the world’s history in almost every corner of the city.

3. What is something on your bucket list that you hope to achieve soon?

I would like to go to Japan to see the Architecture and try authentic Japanese food.

4. What advice would you give to aspiring designers or those just starting in the industry?

Don’t be embarrassed to ask questions and keep your purpose in mind when things get hard.

We appreciate you, Ale. Uou are truly a joy to work alongside and your dedication and passion for your craft is unparalleled.

Featured Project:
Project: Village Optometry
Client: Dr. Douglas Osbourne
Location: Carlsbad, California
SF: 1,780 sf

Our vision for this project was to craft an inviting and dynamic clinic and retail environment. Bathed in natural light, the retail space exudes vibrancy and openness. Inside the clinic, we meticulously designed the exam lanes, pre-testing area, and various supporting areas to maximize space.

Inspired by the geometry of the human eye, our design extends to the ceiling and lighting features, creating a captivating focal point above the retail area and reception/cash wrap desk.

It's employee spotlight time again and this month the focus is on veteran team member, Victoria Middleton! Victoria was one of the first official employees of P33.

Let's learn a little more about Victoria.

1. Why/when did you decide to pursue Interior Design?
My family relocated to San Diego when I was a kid. I became fascinated with floor plans and residential design after going house hunting with my parents. I would pore over the sales brochures, looking at all the different layouts. I then started to draw my own home plans and exterior elevations. To be able to shape the built environment was something inspiring.

2. What is your biggest inspiration/influence for your design style?
I don't really have any inspiration or influences, per se. Past inspirations have included a sculpture by Richard Serra and a beautiful pleated dress. It can come from anywhere, really.

3. Who are some of the people on your playlist right now?
Tom Misch, Bernhoft, Yussef Dayes, FKJ, any chillhop

4. What is your biggest pet peeve?
The sometimes-held belief that a person need be of a certain socio-economic status, education level, or whatever, in order to appreciate good design.

5. Do you have any advice for aspiring designers?
Every day, whether in school or on the job, is an opportunity to learn. Expose yourself to materials. Familiarize yourself with building codes and construction methods. Stay current on software. You don't have to know everything, but knowing when to ask a question is really key. Also, always use a concept.

Thank you, Victoria for all your dedication and hard work!
