A small tool can make a big difference in the field.

In the May/June 20206 issue of North American Clean Energy magazine Kevin had the opportunity to write about something that doesn’t get enough attention in our industry: wire management.

Most issues in the field aren’t caused by major failures. They come from small, overlooked details that add up over time. Improperly managed or over-torqued connectors are a perfect example. They may look fine on day one, but down the road they can lead to performance issues, callbacks, and even safety concerns.

In the article, he breaks down some of the hidden risks installers are running into, why they happen, and what to watch for before they become bigger problems.

At the same time, this is exactly why we’ve been focused on developing better tools for the job. We just launched the S**T 3.5Nm, a dedicated torque-limited tool preset to 3.5Nm for MC4 and H4 style solar connectors. The goal is simple, make connector assembly faster, safer, easier, and more consistent across the jobsite.

This is the kind of practical innovation our industry needs. Not theory. But a real tool for a real problem.

POV: when the tool you created is exactly what the job calls for.

Out in Paonia, Colorado helping at SEI, and the Panel Caddy came through. Moving panels on a ground mount and down the backside of the array is a whole lot easier when you have the right tool in your hands.

PSA for installers: drills (regular or impact) are for speed, not precision.
When torque specs matter, "tightening until it feels or sounds right" isn't a method.

Use specialized torque control (clutch or programmable) and finish on spec.
Fewer stripped fasteners, fewer callbacks.
