🩺 Disky’s Stethoscope Hygiene Champion of the Week 🩺

This week, we’re excited to recognize Jefelyn Garo of Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles after connecting with her at the AACN NTI conference last week in San Diego.

NTI brought together passionate critical care professionals from across the country who are committed to advancing patient safety and improving outcomes at the bedside. It was a pleasure meeting healthcare leaders like Jefelyn who share a strong interest in infection prevention and safer point-of-care practices.

Conversations around stethoscope hygiene continue to gain momentum as clinicians look for workflow-friendly solutions that support both patient safety and patient confidence during every exam.

👏 Thank you, Jefelyn, for taking the time to connect with our team and for your dedication to safer care environments and nursing excellence.

In this clip, Natalia G. Nunez from Baptist Health South Florida shares what fast-paced clinic days look like at Miami Cancer Institute.

Teams may see 1,000–1,400 patients daily, as discussed with Infection Control Today.

Even with the best intentions, cleaning between every patient becomes inconsistent. And for immunocompromised patients, even low-level contamination can carry real clinical risk.

That’s where small, everyday gaps turn into meaningful exposure.

As we close out National Nurses Week and celebrate International Nurses Day, we want to recognize and thank the next generation of nurses stepping into the profession with compassion, dedication, and a commitment to patient safety. đź’™

AseptiScope was honored to sponsor the 2026 Tri-County Technical College Nursing Pinning Ceremony and celebrate these future nurses as they continue their journey in patient care.

We were especially proud to see these graduates join Disky’s National Patient Safety Initiative, helping raise awareness that clean stethoscopes are an important part of safe patient care. Each participant received their own Disky to bring back to their facility to support safer healthcare practices and stronger awareness around stethoscope hygiene.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026. Your patients will be fortunate to have you. 👏

During National Nurses Week, we want to recognize the nurses participating in Disky’s National Patient Safety Initiative and thank them for their dedication to patient safety, infection prevention, and safe patient care.

Every patient interaction matters, and so does every detail of hygiene at the bedside, including stethoscope hygiene.

Thank you to nurses everywhere for the work you do each day.

“Sort of clean isn’t good enough.”

In this clip from a recent Infection Control Today Peer Exchange, Dr. W. Frank Peacock challenges a belief many of us were trained on: that we can clean our way out of stethoscope contamination.

Even with 60 seconds of scrubbing, the data shows we may only get to “cleaner,” but not clean.

Now put that into the context of Candida auris and other MDROs that can cause healthcare-associated infections.

“Clean enough” simply isn't acceptable.

🩺 Disky’s Stethoscope Hygiene Champion of the Week 🏆

This week, we’re proud to spotlight Dr. Eric Crawley from Pali Momi Medical Center (Aiea, HI) for his commitment to safer patient care through better stethoscope hygiene.

In fast-paced clinical environments, it takes leadership to prioritize the small actions that make a big difference. By championing cleaner, more reliable point-of-care practices, Dr. Crawley is helping reduce cross-contamination risk and reinforce a culture of safety for every patient encounter.

Dr. Crawley takes patient safety a step further by using The DiskCover System aseptic touch-free stethoscope barriers for every patient encounter.

"I use this every single day, on every single patient, and, without fail, patients are blown away by it. They are incredibly impressed by our commitment to their safety. I deal with a considerable number of transplants, immuno-suppressed patients, and people that don’t need to pick up resistant pathogens.”

👏 Thank you, Dr. Crawley, for leading by example and helping move healthcare forward.

💙 This week, Disky is celebrating Grier Spivey, BSN, RN from the Children’s Emergency Center at Prisma Health in South Carolina for championing cleaner care and safer patient experiences!

In a fast-paced pediatric emergency setting, every second matters, and so does every patient interaction. Grier is helping lead by example by recognizing that clean hands and clean stethoscopes both play an important role in protecting vulnerable patients from avoidable contamination risks.

Thank you, Grier, for your commitment to safer care for children, families, and your fellow clinicians. Your leadership helps move healthcare closer to a future where every patient can feel confident that the tools used to care for them are clean!

Single-patient disposable stethoscopes sound appealing, but a panel of experts from Infection Control Today highlighted real concerns:

• Reduced acoustic quality
• Workflow frustration (short tubing, poor performance)
• Environmental waste
• High long-term cost

The experts agreed disposables may work in narrow scenarios, but they are not a scalable answer for high-acuity or procedural settings.

Replacing one imperfect solution with another doesn’t eliminate risk, it often redistributes it!

For patients undergoing cancer treatment, even small risks can carry significant consequences.

In a recent Infection Control Today Stethoscope Hygiene Peer Exchange, Natalia Nunez, DNP, MPH, RN, CIC from Baptist Health South Florida’s Miami Cancer Institute shared why stethoscope hygiene matters for their patient population.

For Natalia, the motivation is simple: protecting some of the most vulnerable patients in healthcare.

“The DiskCover matters because it gives our most vulnerable patients an extra layer of safety and removes one more thing for them to worry about as they navigate such a difficult disease process.”

In oncology settings, infection prevention isn’t just about protocols.
It’s about creating a safer environment for patients who are already facing immense challenges.

This week, we celebrate a stethoscope hygiene champion receiving cancer treatment at Baptist Health.

Pamela Lessenberry is a strong, determined, optimistic patient in Kentucky: She is also informed, and knows that the stethoscope diaphragm used to assess her can transmit resistant pathogens like MRSA, Acinetobacter, CRE, Candida, C. Diff, and more. Pam also knows that immunocompromised patients like herself are at a significantly higher risk of a life-changing infection than the average patient.

Thank you, Pam, for raising awareness that unwashed hands and contaminated stethoscope diaphragms can put vulnerable patients at even greater risk.

DISKY is on a mission for clean stethoscope exams every time! Pam supports this mission, do you?
